How hot is too hot for a laptop?

Most 90nm Processors and lower SHOULD NEVER go over 90C, and most laptops and desktops will shutdown when they reach 100C.

So, 80C, while not in the danger zone, is not good either because the warmer a CPU, the lower the lifetime.

CPUs and other chips based on silicone do not last forever, the tiny wires of metal inside evaporate and reform in other places. This is called electromigration, and when the metal evaporates from one spot, it might cut a wire in two, and then reform somewhere else causing a short across two or more other wires!

As you can imageine, this isnt good! However, this process takes a long time, but the warmer your CPU the faster this happens. Thus a cooler CPU lasts longer than a warmer one.

My advice to you is, clean out your vents and cooling fan, make sure the laptop is on a flat surface and the rubber pads on the bottom are intact so the vents get the air they need and are not blocked.

Get your idle temps to around 40 C - 50 C and your load temps to around 60 C - 70 C and you are ok.

Hope that helps :)

Should I buy a gaming laptop or a gaming PC?

If you are sure that a laptop won’t be a very big advantage for you, even though it is portable and compact, I would advise you to assemble a gaming PC. This is because a 65k gaming PC should be better than any of the gaming laptop options available in India for 80k. The GTX 1000 series of graphic cards by NVidia is a huge improvement over the previous 900 series and even a budget card like GTX 1050 should suffice for gaming at 1080p resolution. Go for GTX 1060, if you are willing to reduce expenditure on other components like the CPU case, monitor and peripherals. Don’t go beyond that as 1060 can max out all current games at 1080p.India is a place where on an average dust and humidity levels are high, so laptop fans malfunction regularly and to prolong the life of a laptop, you might have to use a cooling pad, etc. For PCs, cooling components are available dirt cheap and they are much more effective. Also, upgrading a PC is simple and cost effective (I would advise you against spending very less to get a cheap motherboard for this reason, get a decent ATX motherboard). For college purposes, a small screen 14–18k laptop should suffice, and if you need later, you can install different Operating Systems on it like Linux. Keep using Windows on the PC as there is no other alternative for gaming.Moving the PC while shifting hostels might be a small problem though. Also confirm with the hostel authorities whether keeping PCs in rooms is allowed or not.Considering all factors, go for a Gaming PC build at around 60–65k, which should allow you to play even the latest games at at least medium-high settings at resolutions of 1600x900 or 1080p, which is great for gaming. Get a 15k laptop for college purposes, this way you will maximize utility achieved with the same budget. You are going to be an engineer, assembling a cool build shouldn’t be an issue for you ;)

What is the best way to cool a laptop while gaming?

The cooling system of laptops suck..to be honest and if you are gaming, the temperatures are gonna get very high..Here are a few things that I do while gaming on a laptop and hope you find it helpful too:-Place the laptop on an even surface, like a table and not your bed or lap. This helps in proper flow of air into the laptop.Use a good cooling pad.I personally use a Coolermaster cooling pad..and this really helps to keep the temperatures under control.Check if the vents and holes of your laptop are dustfree and not blocked. If they are, a good mini vacuum cleaner will come in handy.Check if the thermal paste on your CPU is fine and not dried up.I replace mine every 6 months (Deepcool Z3).Give your laptop some rest. Take some break in between gaming. This will help the laptop to cool down a little bit.Make sure your room is well ventelated.Keep your AC or Fan on during summers. So, that's it..Hope you find this useful! Goodluck and happy gaming✌

Why does my laptop get so hot when I play games?

yeah computer tend to overheat when you run applications that require a lot of CPU resource. My old Computer use to have this issue of after the game is over the fan is still running like crazy. What I do is I unplug the main power, and immediately my computer's fan will turn off, then I plug it back on again.

What you can do is download some temperature control program. I am using 360 hardware master which is a chinese program that came with the 360 anti virus. If you don't read chinese I am sure you can still find program that monitor and control your pc temperature. I don't know it but you can ask around on yahoo answer :D

How hot should my laptop be?

When it sits idle, it runs at about 60. But, it gets into the 90s when I watch videos, and even higher when gaming. I think the internal fan might be damaged since this is a very recent issue. I have a cooling fan, but it really isn't helping (temp runs at about 90 while gaming, even with the fan) unless I put an ice pack directly under the top left corner, where the vent is. Should I maybe take it to a shop to get fixed or am I better off just getting a new one?

How long will a gaming laptop last?

It’s hard to tell how long a computer will last just from a model. Regardless, start by checking some of the reviews. CNET has a pretty good rating on it and there are a few other reviewers who have given it high ratings. However, I’ll share my experience. I haven’t used this same laptop but I’ll tell you this: I’ve had 4 Acer computers. 2 of them were high end (i.e. “premium”; Acer S and V) models. For the most part, I keep my laptops in the best possible condition. Anyway, out of these 4 laptops, none of them have lasted me more than two years - and by last I mean tolerable performance. The first laptop, within a year, suddenly stopped booting. I was told the motherboard was fried. The second laptop overheated way too much to the point that it would shut down (as you mentioned). The third and fourth ones (the high end ones) were incredible the first two years (each). Super fast, powerful, even played some high end games on them (mind you, at 720p ~30fps) and then - for no comprehensible reason - they just started to run so incredibly slow that my old Intel Celeron laptop from years ago (with Windows Vista) was running the same applications faster than these two. I tried resetting the fourth computer (reloading windows and deleting most/all files) which gave the CPU a minor clock speed bump but it still wasn’t as good as it was when I first received the computer. Now, I’m using a refurbished Dell Latitude that I got for ~300 bucks and it’s incredible (4x the performance of the older laptops).TL;DR - I hate acer (laptops…..their monitors are incredible, though)But make sure you check with others who’ve used acer products before. I’m just one of many who will give you feedback on their laptops.I wish you luck in your adventure to find an awesome gaming laptop! :)

Hot laptop?

yes overheating shuts it down. The problem is even its called laptop, it doesnt do good on lap. Buy a laptop tray for about 14 to 29 dollars from officemax or best buy to put that on ur lap than the laptop. All the ventilation holes in laptops are in the bottom, and those specifically desined trays keep those wholes open. If you put your laptop on a table without a table cloth, you wouldn't need the tray. If it heats too much, they have even trays with built in fan inside them for 20 to 30 dollars
Yes leah by heat sink he means laptop cooling pad or tray that I told you
Here take a look
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...
but you can buy it much cheper when you shop in person, try office max or office depot or staples
and get the ne with built in fan, I just use the one with no fan though, it cost me 14 bucks and it does fine

Laptop gets really hot when playing WoW?

I can completely relate to the problem your having!!! I pretty much quit play WoW on my laptop because I was having the same problems.

Compressed air would be a good start to blowing out all of your fans. I would also suggest getting a cooling fan adapter, something called a "chill pad" that plugs into your USB port and has extra fans that blow up into the laptop to help keep it cool. Main thing is, is to increase the circulation of air underneath your laptop.

If you can upgrade parts of your laptop, look into upgrading your video card and your memory.

Laptop becomes too hot while gaming! is this normal?

The heavier the workload a computer has to do, the hotter it gets. Gaming is one of those heavier processes that will heat up your computer. On top of that, laptops are notorious for heating issues due to poor ventilation/cooling.

Having said that, you should make sure that your laptop remain in a good range of temperatures at all times. If you find it exceeding the acceptable temps, I advise you get a cooling pad for it. (Check manual/online docs for your laptops safe temperatures)
