Which is the best for NPS, monthly or yearly contribution?

A monthly NPS contribution will work like a mutual fund SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) if you have a reasonable equity allocation in your NPS account. It will protect you from catching a market high and spread out your investment. Considering this, a monthly contribution can be more optimal than a, once a year lumpsum contribution. However unless your bank lets to do an ‘auto-debit’, doing a monthly contribution at a bank branch or even online can be a hassle. If you find yourself missing contributions as a result of this extra effort, try doing it quarterly or at less frequent intervals. Don’t worry too much about the result of this on your NPS returns - it is a product with a long enough lock-in to protect you from market highs in any case. You can find out more about the NPS here.

Pension contributions?

Most pension schemes will allow you to pay regular payments (either monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or annually) or occasional single payments or a combination of the two. You need to check with the pension company what the minimum level of payment is.

You are allowed to contribute up to 100% of your earnings into a pension per tax year or £3,600 whichever is greater.

Can I stop making contributions to my Roth IRA?

Yes, we have a Roth with USAA and we stopped paying into it after about two years (decided the money would be better spent paying off our credit card debts, now all gone). The money still sits there, earning interest for us. I've transfered the money in and out of different mutual funds almost yearly. We took some out while we were waiting for our tax refund a year ago, then, when the refund came, put it back in.
