You don't need the xp install cd. Just run it as if you were installing Windows 7 on the separate hard drive and it will install normally because you had no OS in the other hard drive (NOT the one with Windows XP). Choose the clean install option and wait for 7 to install and activate as normal, given you have the full OS cd of 7. If you want to upgrade your XP hard drive to Windows 7, you will have to back up your data and choose the clean install option when you install it. (You can't use the upgrade option because Microsoft won't allow for that, except for Vista users). You can use the Upgrade media for 7, though, for doing an "upgrade." Hope this helps. It seems like an Windows update problem. I'd recommend to try the below steps:1. Lookup your Windows update in control panel & install all available updates listed. Restart your machine. 2. If your Windows is up to date or dont wish to update your Windows, then uninstall the current wireless driver/ bluetooth driver, (this will also disable your wi-fi) 3. Open up HP assistance (if your HP came with Windows pre-installed then you will have this program), and click Refresh to let it check for available updates. Install updates if found. Restart. 4. If the step 3 doesn't fix it? There is probably nothing you can do about that... it all depends on exactly it is locking up. Is it locking up because of Bad Ram in that 6 year old laptop? Is it locking up because the hard drive has finally failed (when most hard drives will only last 3 to 5 years, as that is the expected life span of one)? Is it locking up because the system is heavily infected and the recovery data is corrupted? Unfortunately, you can't find the discs for that unit, because you were supposed to make them when the unit was new. So... what can you do now? If you can get hold of an OEM install of Windows XP Home, you can attempt to reinstall Windows that way, but if the Ram or Hard drive is the issue, it won't matter. You will need to diagnose why the recovery process locks up first. With a Windows XP installation disc, you could enter the recovery console and run CHKDSK to see if the hard drive is failing or has bad sectors. You can download Memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com and make a boot disc you can use to check your Ram, to identify or eliminate that as a possibility. In short, you need to identify what is causing the process to lock up. Yes, I realize you are asking that question here... but without getting hands on the unit, none of us can tell you what is causing the unit to lock up. We can only point you in a few directions to check yourself. Unfortunately, without access to all the right tools, you might be left with taking the unit to a computer repair shop. end of line

Rest have already been done for you..The synchronization with Microsoft Account is worth talking about. Making a Microsoft account is very useful and is quite easy as you don't need any extra email. You can make it with an already existing one like mine i have my gmail live id. You can synchronize it with your Facebook account and all sorts of accounts that you have. Once you have linked your microsoft account to your computer, your life will be made easy. You will get all the calenders(FB birthdays, google calender, etc) in the calender app. Your mailbox will automatically get created. Your messaging accounts, etc all get synced by itself.All the settings(even the minor ones like the position of taskbar) gets synced to your account and if you want to configure Windows 8 on another device or if you reinstall it, you just need to sync your Microsoft account and all your settings, wallpaper, themes, etc will be back.You can view all your photos(from skydrive, Fb to flickr) at one place under the Photos appNo need of Daemon Tools or other iso mounting software.
