How Can I Prepare To Make The Varsity Volleyball Team

How can i make the varsity volleyball team?

Okay, where to start? Well, i am a 5'11'' athletic freshman and i am very interested in making the varsity volleyball team. i have been playing for 5 years and i recently went through a 18 hour instruction thing with the whole volleyball team.(dont know what you wanna call it.) i am a consistent overhand server, not a very good back row player but i know the rotation and i can hit and block well. I just need to work on my jump serve. I am a middle hitter/blocker. I have been going to the open gyms and everything since June and have been working super hard. I always keep a good attitude and hustle for everything. Skills week is this coming week, then placement is on August 6th. I was just wondering what are my chances of making varsity? I am pretty much guaranteed on the freshman team because our school is so small we don't make cuts, but i dont want to settle for that. i really need more tips how to impress the coaches to make varsity and if there is any advice from you guys. :)

Can I be on the varsity volleyball team as a freshman?

That all depends on your school and the coaches. Since you are going into 8th grade, what I would recommend is to talk to the high school coaches and ask them the same question. Also ask them what skills/drills/conditioning you should focus on during the next season as well as during the off season.

Showing a coach you are interesting in working hard, especially now while you are in 8th grade, will go a long way.

Varsity Volleyball Starter?

Coaches like it when player come to tryout in shape and ready to work hard. Come early and be already to play. Make sure you have already stretch and loose up your body. It's great to be there early
because you get to show them you are commit to the team. Coaches might need help setting up. Show them you are willing to help out the team anyway that they you can. Show them you are a team player and will to help out when need. Listen to the Coaches advice and do you best at it. Cheer on the other
player when you are on the court or off. Go in to tryout believe in yourself. Tell yourself I'm got this and play like it. Give it your all,it's all about you shinning on the court.

You can work on your stamina for game rallies by running short sprints. Start them off by running
20 to 25 ft for about 2 minutes to 4 minutes at a time. Do it for about 3 times a day. Also jump rope at
least twice a day for starter. Because this will help you to stay in shape until tryout and also help you
with you feet work and reaction time to the ball. Make sure you core is strong and your legs, jump rope
strength your whole body and help with conditioning, also. Go get your spot on the team. It's wait on you. Go hard, you got this! Good Luck!

How to make varsity volleyball freshman year?

Making varsity as a freshman will be super tough, but you have to make sure that you go to ALL the conditioning, open gyms, summer camps, etc. Don't assume that since you have skills you can just walk into tryouts and blow everyone away. Even if you're the best person in that gym, chances are if he's never seen you you won't make varsity. And whether or not it's supposed to be, it's very political. If the coach likes you, you'll go far. So if the coach tells you to run, you run. If they tell you to run out into the parking lot and get their back from their car, you do it! it doesn't matter! It also helps to make friends with the girls on the varsity team! Seniors especially usually have some input into who makes the teams. Basically the most important thing to do is just to throw your *** on the ground to pick up every ball and leave your heart out there on the court! Show them that you're committed and ready to throw yourself out there, especially if you're trying out as a DS. Good luck:)))

Should I join the highschool volleyball team? Would it be too hard? I don't have any experience though.

Yes. I joined my freshman volleyball team 2 years ago with very limited experience when I started. If you have NO prior experience with the sport, of course it will be challenging. It’s something entirely new to you, and you almost guaranteed will struggle at the very beginning, should you make it.However, I am asking you to at least try because I was like you. I had never played a sport before (I don’t know if you have or not), and this was the first time I’d ever played for an organized team. And it was probably one of the best experiences of my life so far.Admittedly, I was extremely bad (and today, I still feel subpar against other, better people). This had never stopped me from going out and playing, though. I tried out for my JV team last year, and unfortunately, I did not make it. I was disappointed for a short while, but I didn’t give up. I continue to go to my local health club, and play at their open gym nights to improve my skills. I hope to make my varsity team in a little over a month.I highly recommend you at least try out for the team. You might find a new love.

What are High School Varsity Volleyball Requirements?

In my years of coaching high school volleyball, very few freshmen made the varsity. I'm in California, where a lot of girls start playing club volleyball when they're 12, so by the time they get to high school some girls already have 3 years of club experience. That helps a lot.

The tryouts I ran evaluated all the volleyball skills. The thing that would make me look at a freshman seriously is serve receive. One of the freshman I remember taking on the varsity was a pretty skilled setter, and my other setter that season was a senior. We had been running a 5-1 the previous season, but I started using a 6-2 during the year because the freshman was good enough to get some playing time. She ended up setting the next 3 years for the varsity in a 5-1 and went on to play in college.

Thinking about the freshmen who've made varsity though, they usually have a lot of confidence and court awareness. They have played enough that they're aware of the positions and the basic rotations (5-1, 6-2) used in high school volleyball.

You might try to find out how many seniors were on last year's team to get a feel for how many players need to be replaced. If 5 or 6 graduated and you have a lot of experience, you've got a shot.

I never put a freshman on the varsity unless I expected her to get some playing time. I've put quite a few reasonably talented freshmen on the JV -- the inexperienced freshmen would end up on the frosh team -- because I wanted them to get more playing time than they would have gotten on the varsity.

So don't take it as a terrible horrible thing if you make JV rather than varsity. Step up and be a great team player and the coaches will look at you your sophomore year as a varsity member.

Good luck at tryouts!

What are my chances on making my High Schools Varsity Volleyball team?

I'll be frank: your chances are very slim, unless your high school has a weak volleyball program. "Having potential" in 7th grade does not translate to the varsity team as an inexperienced freshman. You really need a lot of playing time and court awareness to make varsity as a freshman.

I've been working with a local high school volleyball program for the last decade. In all that time, we've taken 5 or 6 freshman on the varsity, and those players had been on top level club teams throughout middle school, most of them earning medals at the Junior Olympics.

I think that if you love volleyball, you should become more acquainted with the sport over the next few months. If you make a team at your high school, be happy that you're going to get some coaching and learn more about the game.

Is it too late to join a volleyball team in my junior year?

Of course not. I played volleyball for a total of 5 years. 1 middle school and 4 high school but it wasn't cut out like that. After 2 years of playing I actually got cut from the team. The way how it worked was the coach talked to each player who made it and the rest of the guys just figured out the results. When I didn't get talked to during school hours I just prepared to walk home right after class was over but on my way out the coach stopped me and asked if I would be okay being the team manager meaning I would be a reserve and just take stats with no play time all season. This also included being the odd one out at practice. Everytime there was practice I could only play with myself on the extra court. This continued for what seemed like a century and I really thought about just leaving but I got a break. One player became ineligible because of grades meaning another spot was open. Long story short I ended up captain, starting player, and went varsity for the next 2 years. Had I just walked home or left too soon I probably would have never gotten the opportunity to do what I did so to answer your question no it is never too late

What does it mean if you made it to the JV volleyball team?

The Junior Varsity team is for the players who either aren't very athletic but know how to play, and for the athletic who are still learning how to play well. Even if you didn't make the more competetive team (the varisty team), the JV team is really fun! That's where you learn the basics of the game and compete against other schools of the same level. In some schools, juniors and seniors are not allowed to be on JV, so they either make varsity or are cut from the team altogether. But in my school apperantly that's not the case. I was a junior last volleyball season and because I've never played on a volleyball team (outside of gym class), I've been on the track team and my JV volleyball coach took me in because he said I was athletic. After a little more than two months, I was able to learn the basics of this awesome game and was able to fall in love with volleyball! This coming up August, I'm going to be a senior and although I should be trying out for Varsity, I've heard that there are some seniors on the JV lacrosse team, so I'm guessing that if you don't make varsity, you can still make JV. Best of luck during the season! And whether you make JV or Varsity, just remember to have fun!!

Is it too late to do volleyball sophomore year of high school?

As I high school coach and a long-time player, I can tell you it's never too late to start playing. Certainly starting later puts you at a disadvantage, but it's something you can quickly overcome with hard work. A gymnastics/sports background certainly helps a lot, though there may be some "bad" habits you need to beware of (for instance, I often see basketball players struggle with their hitting approach). Here's what you should focus on:1) Play club in the off-season. Club season last much longer than high school season, and it's a great opportunity to improve your skills. DO NOT just look for the strongest club in the area. FIND A GOOD COACH. Often these overlap, but I know a few clubs whose strength is sustained by reputation (and influx of already strong players), not by their (current) coaching staff. Likewise, many strong coaches are more interested in developing players than joining the most competitive club in their area.2) Go for it. Go to tryouts (I guess it's too late this year, but definitely next year). If you school holds open gyms, go to those. TALK TO THE COACHES. Find out what you can do to improve. They will be happy to help (if they're not, they're not good coaches and the program isn't worth your time). Contrary to popular belief, we like it when players come up to talk to us and ask us questions, and we're always happy to help you out :)3) This is especially important as a new player who is trying to catch up to others. BE A TEAM PLAYER. It's easy to get caught up in improving yourself, and worrying about catching up to everyone, and that's not a bad thing, but at the end of the day, volleyball is a team sport. The strongest player on the team is not always the most skilled. It's the player that makes everyone else better. It's simple math: putting my strongest player on the court improves 1 out of 6 positions. Putting my friendliest, most supportive, most encouraging player on the court improves the other 5.
