How Can I Record Live Tv Over The Air

Are tv shows recorded live?

I always notice in all the best tv shows they have canned laughter in the background of an audience.

For example. Roseanne, George Lopez, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Home Improvement. They all have laughing in the background. Is it a real audience? Even when you watch the making of the show it looks like a live set because there are seats for an audience. How do they do it though? How do they record it all live?

How can I record from an old fashioned tube TV on to my laptop (Mac)?

As mentioned in a previous post the question has to be asked, what are you REALLY trying to do? Transferring old home movies on VHS tape to your Mac?Also the previous post mentioned you should look for a commercial service to do that as there are way too many pitfalls if you're technically challenged. When you mention “old fashioned tube TV” then you are showing your lack of knowledge of the technology. “TV”s only allow you to view video/audio content and not output any kind of signal (unless you think seeing the image and hearing the built-in speaker is considered an output). To get that content on to the screen it has to originate from another kind of technology that you might not be aware of. Sources like “over the air” or “cable tv” tuners, VHS/Betamax tapes, DVDs (both recordable and playback only) or finally older NTSC/PAL security cameras (or even tape-based camcorders) are possibilities. Please comment if you truly want help.

Are there alternatives to Cable, DirectTV and Dish Network?

"All" the live TV channels? No way that they're free. That includes both over-the-air (OTA) and pay-TV channels, and you're going to have to pay something to someone to get them "all."

The current live broadcasts on your local OTA stations are generally unavailable on the Internet or anywhere else, other than with an OTA antenna or in your pay-TV subscription.

As some of the other answers indicate, you *can* get a vast number of old TV programs and movies from various Internet resources, but you won't get the current episodes of major TV network series.

The cheapest option for quality HD television reception is a very good antenna, whatever is right for your particular location. That will get you your local OTA channels in the best HD available from any source other than a Blu-ray disk.

For anything more than that, you'll be paying something to someone, like an Internet provider fee and a subscription payment to something like Netflix.

I want to cancel DirecTV but still use my Tivo. Is this possible?

03-28-2006, 02:41 PM
I've lost count of the number of times I've said this in response to other posts, but you do NOT have a TiVo!

You have a DirecTV receiver with TiVo service. This is where the confusion lies. There is no connection to TiVo with the box you have other than the fact that the DVR part is powered (?) by TiVo software. Everything about this box other than that is DirecTV. Therefore there is nothing to subscribe to TiVo WITH! If you give up the D* service, then just like if it was a plain jane receiver, it's next to useless.

The only TiVos out there are the standalone boxes.

What does "go off air" mean in TV broadcasting?

To ‘go off air' is when you cease broadcasting. This can be where a station/channel is broken and they cannot transmit, or for an individual show it might just be when they finish their segment. For example before the news starts someone will announce that it is X minutes until they are 'live, on air' and then when the news finishes someone will announce that they are now 'off air'. “That's it folks, we're off air for the night, thank you all.”In another, but very different use of the phrase it can be used to describe recording of a broadcast. For example for legal reasons a TV station is often required to record their own output exactly as the consumer might receive it (incase of a later court or regulatory action). In this case we would call that an 'off air recording’ because the recording was made from the broadcast (‘recorded off of the air'). That is a usage that would be less commonly heard outside of the few people who have to do it for their job. Also if one network records the output of another network they might use the same 'off air' terminology. “Did you get this from Channel 5?”, “No, I recorded it off air”.

How do I watch live major networks on Roku?

There are some devices that act as dvr’s for a Roku. I have the Tablo but since I lack ideal antenna placement I don’t get the channels I would like. Simple..TV is an option. I believe ChannelMaster+ is also an option. Basically those are connected to an Antenna and then act as a relay through a Roku channel.HDHomerun is a device that just has TV receivers. It does not act as a dvr device (unless using PLEX dvr)Another option is to get Sling or Vue which have networks going beyond channels that can be received (OTA = Over The Air)Roku over time has also gotten a variety of channels that sometimes get live TV. You have to activate the channels by entering a code into the networks website. Once the code is entered you are prompted to log into a tv provider you have which that channel is subscribed to. (Although many of these channels are almost on-demand services, in that some you can’t watch live tv rather shows that have aired on the network)I am not really sure about Time Warner Cable works. I think if you have a subscription that the Roku can get all the TWC channels you are signed up for…..I don’t know and rather think.
