How Can I Tell If My Student Loan Is Defaulted I Still Get Gst And Refunds.the Fact That It

Tax Refund and Calling 1-800-304-3107?

I have been in a student loan repayment program and have one or two more payments until it is out of default. My dad's girlfriend works for a student loan collection agency and they have seen a lot of the loans not showing people being offset. She can look at the Department of Education's screen and it will tell her there. I called the agency I am working with and they do not have the DOD screen so they couldn't tell me. The person I spoke with said he had it at a previous job. I had called the 1-800-304-3107 number and it says no debts are found. Should I go ahead and e-file with 100 percent certainty that my husband and I will get our refund? For tax year 2007 we filed the injured spouse. Has anyone experienced the 800 number telling them they didn't owe and still had their taxes withheld? Thanks everyone!

Why is severance pay taxed at a higher rate for federal taxes?

You need to understand the difference between withholding and a tax return.

Severance pay is not your regular paycheck. So the federal income tax is withheld at a fixed 25%. This is simplier for the employer and prevents game playing with the w-4 form.

If too much is withheld, you get it back at when you file. If too little is withheld, you will owe.

Your tax return is based on your total income. That includes the lump sum of the severance check. If this is unusually high, it may push you into a higher tax bracket than usual. The last $1 of the severance check may be taxed on the tax return higher than the first $1--but if you cross over from the 15% to the 25% tax bracket, you won't be taxed at 25% on all of the money, just the overage.

California Sales tax refund for international tourists?

No, sorry, but there is no sales tax refund offered in the US, unlike the VAT refunds in many other countries. If for no other reason than there are 50 separate states with 50 different sets of laws on sales taxes, not to mention literally thousands of local jurisdictions with their fingers in the till. It would be impossible to manage.

Can you claim garnishments on your tax return?

I was garnished about 200 per check last year...for either sales tax or state taxes... and then after that was taken care of.... Business garnishments have and are being taken out now.

I didn't know if this was something that could be claimed on my tax return towards previous expenses which most of these were business related. This is because I'm self-employed and also have regular employment.

Thanks for any help.
