How Do I Get My Deleted Files Back

Where do all deleted files go after in recycle bin?

Digital files each have an attached small tag of code which contains information to identifies it and enables the computer operating system to find it and retrieve the file when it is called for.In operating system (OS) that provide a recycle bin, when a file is marked for deleting the OS rewrites the ID tag with its location to be found in the recycle bin. The physical location of the file does not change, only the ID tag. When a file is saved, especially a large file it’s data is not normally saved all together. (exception may be when a newly formatted disk is clear of many files. A busy disk will record packets of the file’s data wherever it can find free disk space. Where each of the packets are located is recorded on the ID tag. When a file is deleted, as mentioned above, it is marked as deleted but being also marked as in the recycle bin the disk space used remains reserved.Went the recycle bin is emptied, all files in the bin have their tags erased the disk space is marked as free. New file’s data packets can be written over them. As long as that space remains unused there are programs that can be used to find and undelete deleted files.Files are not actually erased when they are deleted even if a disk is formatted. Formatting a disk clears all tags on all files. Some serious formatting writes 1 & 0 over the whole disk this is called wiping a disk.

Where do deleted files go from USB flash drive?

Depending on what system you're on, the files will either go to a hidden folder on the drive representing the trash (Mac), the trash on the local drive of the computer (Ubuntu), or be simply erased (Windows).

In all three, you can change how files are deleted on removable storage media.

How to get deleted files back? Where did they go?

You can often successfully recover deleted files from a PC, external drive, phone or camera memory card or USB Memory stick, it just depends on what's happened since the files were deleted.

When you delete files the data itself isn't deleted, just the index entry that says where the data for those files is located. The space containing the deleted files is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.

If and when that happens, then it becomes too late to recover your deleted files so it is very, very important to not save any new files or data to the device concerned.

If the deleted files are on your PC, use another PC to browse the internet for a solution as internet browsing causes lots of temporary files to get written to the disk. Download any file recovery software, for example, to a memory stick, plug that in the computer with the deleted files and run it from there.

If the deleted files are on a memory card or USB memory stick, just don't save any new files to it.

One of the easiest ways to see if you can recover deleted files is to try some file recovery software. There are many such products available, both commercial and free & also of varying quality!

A good tip is to try the free trial version of a good commercial product that will scan the device for deleted files and show you exactly what files can be recovered as thumbnail images in the preview screen. At least that will show you if you can recover the deleted files at all or if it's too late already.

Deleted files keep coming back (MAC OS X LEOPARD)?

Didn't help much. Tell us how a file "comes back". Does it jump out of the trash? How long does it take for it to jump out? Does it reappear in some location of the hard drive? Where? Do you have external drive(s) connected?

When odd things happen, disconnect all unnecessary items, repair the hard drive, and boot to Safe Boot mode.

1. Disconnect everything except power cord (laptop), keyboard, mouse, and one monitor (desktop).
2. Open Disk Utility, select the internal hard drive, select the "First Aid" tab, and click to verify the hard drive. If it finds any problems, boot to the install DVD, go past the language screen, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select the internal hard drive, select the "First Aid" tab, and click to repair the hard drive. After it finishes, repair again. It should say "No repairs were needed". If not... big trouble.
3. Restart holding shift. You should see "Safe Boot" in tiny red letters in the center of the startup screen. If not, restart and hold shift longer.

After all this, and while booted in Safe Boot mode, move the wicked files to the trash, go to the Finder menu and choose "Secure Empty Trash".

How do I recover my deleted data files from a hard disk?

Thanks for A2A.Can we recover the formatted files from a computer? How is it possible? It is possible provided that it was only a quick format and nothing else has been written to the drive since. If it was the System drive then you are going to have to remove it and create a new System drive. If it was an external DATA drive, then you only need to make sure that you have enough blank space on another drive for the missing data to be written.Download and install a utility like Recuva. The free version will usually suffice.Connect up a completely blank (full formatted) external drive.Get Recuva to scan that drive and it should reveal nothing.Connect up your hoped-to-be-recovered external drive.Get Recuva to scan the source drive and it should start showing lists of files that are potentially recoverable.Instruct Recuva to write all recoverable files to the freshly prepared target drive.Shut down the system and put the currently “damaged” drive in a safe place.Start your system again, and copy all the files that you want to keep (usually photos and music) to their preferred location.Once you have exhausted this recovery drive of everything that you want to keep, both it and the original source drive can be formatted again and returned to active service. If the “damaged” drive is internal to your machine, but not the system drive, then still use a large enough external drive as the target. Don’t complain about the cost of purchasing a 2TB external HDD. It’s nothing compared to what it would cost you if you need a professional Data Recovery Warehouse would charge and there’s no guarantee that the data is recoverable even then. Besides, once everything is on the External, you can disconnect it while you make sure that you reformat the internal and then copy the files that you really want back into the machine. You then have a backup drive in the hope that you won’t make the same mistake a second time.
