If you want a truly hard minecraft server, you can always try 2b2t. It’s a server where anything goes such as using hacks. This is the oldest server in minecraft that has a truly amazing history (including many “wars”). It’s currently going through another war between the veterans and the rushers. You can find out more from the leaders of the two war leaders. Just search on youtube FitMc (the veterans’ leader) or TheCampingRusher (the rushers’ leader).Note: You might not be able to get on because it has a few hour long wait to get on the server. This server was widely publicized by TheCampingRusher sparking the war.

You really should search a tutorial on YouTube, but since you asked here, I will provide basic descriptions of types of serversPrison serversThis is a server where you are a prison inmate, and you mine different materials and sell them to rank up. When you get the money, however,  you can use it to buy gear, and fight in pvp(Player vs. Player) Matches. These are more advanced. 2. Minigame ServersOn these are multiple games such as capture the flag(another pvp game) and hide and seek(you turn into a block and hide). These vary, as the difficulty can vary between games3. Adventure MapsI know of one server that hosts these(mc.hypixel.net), but right now it is in closed beta. These maps are a story, that you play through, and you usually fight a boss at the end.4. Hunger Games, and Other PvP gamesThese are mostly fight to the death games, and skill level varies, as most players play these. You start on a pedestal, and when the game starts, everyone rushes to the center to loot the chests. All of the other players start on their own island. The island in the middle, has a lot of loot, and is very enticing. In survival mode - as mentioned by other answers here - your objective is to survive. It is very easy to die on the first day itself if you do not know what you are doing. After that it is up to you to figure out how you want to play further. Do you want to explore ? the world is vast and randomly created. No two games are the same. Go out and start exploring the world. Gather food. This games comes the closest to being a Robinson Crusoe. You are alone in the big bad world ! Of course you have better tools at your disposal than RC, as you can make enchanted weapons and magic drinks to boost your fighting ability. Well none really. Minecraft Mods are made to fulfil and entice the bland, vanilla, version of Minecraft. Therefore, whatever that is already existing, will probably suffice for most players satisfaction; however, new mods are still made and released even to this very day.Also, assuming that you’re questioning “the limitiations of mods in Minecraft” on a particular SERVER, I’d say, there are plenty of plausible regulations.It is imperative that you double check certain server “Rules” and, more specifically “Approved Modifications” prior to playing the server. Such information can be found on forums, more likely than not. Also, that is to say, IF NOT, your account is potentially liable to be suspended or falsely banned from a network. Trust me, always check before playing - appealing afterwards does not worth the effort.Also, most servers allow passive or so called “client side” mods, such as, Visual/Aesthetics Mods, or more generally speaking, mods that alter the game passively and do not trespass or violate the gameplay. In other words, just for the sake of transparency… IF someone was observing you in a spectator vantage point, you should appear identical to others regardless of the mods activated in your exclusive game.Moral of the story: To be fair, use mods that don’t give yourself even the slightest of advantages in terms of gameplay.
