How Do I Protect My Legs Without Shinguards

Why didn't Roman armour protect the arms and legs?

Roman armor did protect the legs and arms. The shield would cover the shield arm and torso completely and the legs for the most part as well, the right arm was exposed only while one was attacking an opponent in melee with quick stabs to the torso. The use of greaves were mentioned by others so I wont go into explaining those. Overall the availability of arms and armor was a matter of fashion, availability, interest and ultimately cost. The roman legionaries were expected to buy their own equipment so they only took what they could afford. On a different note the quintessential image of the red tunic and uniformly decorated shields is false, there is no historical evidence for this what so ever. The legionnaire in the image you posted is representative of roughly 100 years of the overall existence of the roman legions and that is all. Later the panoply's were changed quite a bit in both style and purpose even to the point of completely stopping the use of the Lorica Segmentata and replacing it with scale or mail armor.Romans...note the vambraces. The Dacian falx wielded by the Dacians (barbarians) here was one of the reasons why the upgraded armor was needed and adopted in more less 150-ish AD. The hacking blade was simply too effective against flesh and bone. Here you can see the effect of a falx on a roman scutum during a modern day reenactment. And this last image was a late Roman Catapracht, a new unit type adopted after facing the same type of cavalry (catapracht) while fighting Parthians and loosing to them entire armies at a time.Romans tweaked their methods, tactics and adopted weapons, armor, ships and pretty much everything else military into their own aproach to the subject once they saw how useful they were used against them.

In Taekwondo sparring, is a shin guard enough to protect the knee?

Shin pads won’t protect your knees. As others have said though, knee collisions are fairly rare especially things like knee to knee. The only instance I can think of that can potentially damage your knee is either blocking with the knee, or using the knee to strike like in Muay Thai. However, because the knee is likely bent when blocking or striking, the knee is actually pretty sturdy. If someone managed to strike the side of your knee with a roundhouse or side kick, it may cause serious injury since it is a deliberate attack on the joint itself. Knee pads won’t help you in this situation, though. I don’t think you’ll need to worry about it since the knees aren’t valid target areas in competitive TKD.With all that said, you’ll more likely injure your knee in TKD by not pivoting your supporting foot when executing full hip kicks like a powerful roundhouse. Joints can surprisingly take a lot of impact, but once you twist them the wrong way you can destroy them (philosophy of joint locks).

Are shin guards required?

I am playing rec soccer in in couple weeks becuase my friends begged me to. I haven't played since I was 8, so I don't remember a lot about it. I got some cheap cleats, but I am trying to keep cost to a minimum. Are shin guards required? I have a high pain tolerance, so I'm just wondering if they are mandatory?

Why are shin guards important in karate?

A good 20 plus years ago when I was in my early 20s, I was taking Shotokan karate. I had the coolest Sensei who had a few black belts in other arts, was a Golden Gloves boxer, kick boxing champion, won dozens and dozens of full contact karate competitions, and had been in a number of street fights. He was the real deal and had the ability to back up what he taught. All us young guys wanted to be like him and this gave us the confidence that we were on the right path. After a few months of training we all had the massive confidence which allowed us to destroy anything in our path, and then finally (FINALLY!!!) the big day came when we got to spar! This was the moment where I was going to showcase all my kicks, punches, defenses, and counters. This was Bloodsport! I was about to be that dude in an underground death match world who made his living from a trail of dead bodies. A classmate and I faced off, heard the word “Hajime” (which means begin) and we both went for a lower right leg kick at the same time. Our shins met at full force and we instantly fell to the ground! I was laying there for a few minutes thinking I was hit with a baseball bat and might never be able to walk again. Somehow I managed to limp off the mat, embarrassed, wishing I had stopped by the local martial arts equipment store I had passed by so many times before. The short lived life of Billy Bad Ass was over.Extreme pain is why you wear shin pads.

Do you have to were shin guards in softball??

not unless you're a catcher, but i recommend sliders (sliding shorts), a slideguard (to protect your knee) and ankle protectors. trust me, if there's one thing you don't want, it's to be hit in the ankle with a wild pitch and bruise or break your ankle bone. i did that this year, and it's not pretty.

Why do MLB baseball players wear their shinguards twisted?

I have seen some MLB players recently who wear small shin guards when batting but twist them so the actual guard is facing towards the plate even when they are swinging, not towards the pitcher, which offers no protection if you get hit. Why do they do this?

Soccer Referee Shin Guards?

Referees are not required to wear shin guards. Referees have their own set of uniform and equipment rules. Those rules come from the various national associations, rather than Law 4 of the LOTG.

When I was assigning, one of my referees could have used them once. He awarded a free kick in a U-12B match, and made the error of standing right next to the ball while the defending team withdrew.

Forgetting that the player was hyper active and sometimes acted without thinking, the coach shouted to one very big lad on his team to take he kick. The boy immediately dashed forward to kick the ball, but while missing it completely instead kicked the ref full force on the shin.
