How do you reduce eye strain from the computer screen?

I spend alot of my time behind a computer not because I am lazy, but I live a very long way from my family and we usually spend time and talk on the computer and share stuff over the internet. How can I reduce the eye strain that the computer gives you after a while? Should I take breaks like go on for an hour then go do something else, then get back on? Im just curious. Not to mention I have alot of things school requires me to use the computer for.

I noticed this when I was looking in the mirror and there was a bloodshot line on the white part of my eye and they said it was strain, but I cant find a good solution for this. :/

How do I reduce strain on my eyes from long usage of the computer?

It is great that you are aware that time on the computer can have a negative effect on your eyes and that you are looking to prevent future problems. Computer eyestrain can cause some big problems down the road.

Keep these points in mind:
- Set up your computer correctly. The proper viewing distance is 20-24 inches. The correct viewing angle is 10 to 20 degrees from the midscreen to the top of the screen.

- Use a good monitor. Usually the higher the resolution (the more pixels) the better. For color monitors, look for smaller dots per inch (less than .28mm). Higher refresh rates (flicker speeds) are preferred, at least 70 Hz. Make sure the monitor has a high enough illumination to match the surroundings (be aware that antireflection screens reduce illumination).

- Use proper posture. This includes a tucked in chin, slight curve at the neck rather than a forward head and neck, a straight upper back with only a slight roundedness, and hollow in the low back.

- Make sure overall illumination of the room is no more than three times brighter than the screen

- Adjust screen brightness and contrast properly.

- Use a desk lamp if possible instead of an overhead light.

- Set the screen at an angle that reduces need to bend your neck, and reduces reflections.

- Keep the screen free of dust.

- Increase font size for comfortable viewing (browsing - use "View/text size/increase") - apparently, viewing small fonts can actually cause rises in blood pressure & stress levels.

General Points

* Take rest breaks at least every 20 minutes to allow eyes and muscles to recuperate. Short, frequent breaks are better than longer, less frequent breaks. Try 2-3 minutes every 15-20 minutes, 5 minutes every 30 minutes, or 10 minutes every hour.
* Frequently look at something more than 20 feet away.
* Blink regularly to keep your eyes moist.
* Don't use for more than 2 hours in any sitting.
* Stretch frequently
* Change tasks to prevent muscle stiffness.
* Don't work in a dark room
* Humidity helps - if your room's is dry, get a humidifier, especially in the winter.
* If you wear reading glasses when working on the computer, have your doctor test your vision at the distance of the length of your arm, rather than closer. This is the distance you want to be from the screen.

“Eye strain” is a nebulous term. It can be due to presbyopia (old eyes), dry eyes, over or undercorrected prescription, convergence insufficiency, divergence excess, latent strabismus, manifest tropia or phoria (a tendency for the eyes to turn), etc. With that all said. If you have “eye strain” you should seek the care of a competent eye doctor to determine the exact etiology. This will involve a comprehensive history and exam. You can help by detailing the best you can how and when the “eye strain” is manifest, the provocative and palliative factors, the character of the sensation, the duration, the onset etc. You will want to make sure the doctor analyzes your correct refractive error (prescription) which may require a dilated/cycloplegic refraction, a detailed motility exam and other examinations that are indicated.Back to your question, depends if wear bifocals, reading glasses, computer glasses but the monitor should be in a comfortable position that allows the head and eyes to be in a natural position and the type to be as clear as possible and to minimize the strain. i used to wear glasses but lost them and got contacts on the second day i left them in my eye too long and they stuck, taking them out caused redness but no scartches. i also had developed an allergy to opti-free after using so much to take them out. after taking them out the redness has stayed but not as bad . long story short . saw a eye specialist twice and was said to be fine and a little dryness . but after using all top rated eye drops even the ones a pharmacist recommended to me that didn't work i started thinking back then i used to get headache from walking around blurry-blind when i was younger and also notice that the day i lost my glasses i did see redness so im thinking that it may be eye strain the redness is directly on the sides of my cornea not on the top or bottom i also notice off focus vision sometimes. do glasses really reduce strain.

Does a retina screen reduce eye-strain?

Yes it does, because it is clearer. No it does not, because retina displays tend to be glossy. Depends on your eyes' light sensitivity. Your question might suggest that it is high resolution to blame for more eye strain. That is not the case. Instead it is the fact that high resolution (retina) screens tend to be glossy (not matte). But not everyone suffers eye strain because of a glossy screen, at least not immediatelly. Eliminating glare, i.e. matching the brightness of your screen to that of the environment is (among other  measures) key to reducing eye strain. But not everyone's eyes (depending on eyes' light sensitivity) react to computer screen brigtness in the same way:many people seem to be fine with their screen at full brigtness (to match general lighting, which is often very bright)others (it is certainly my case) will quickly start to suffer from eye strain because the brightness emitted by your computer is just too much for our eyes. So, you will try to help yourself by lowering the brightness of your screen. However, at lower brightness a new problem surfaces. The lower screen brightness the more its surface is mirror-like; the screen reflects lights and objects. (If you turn off your screen - extreme situation - you will see what I mean).These reflections now become a new source of eye strain as they are very disturbing to the eye, just as much if not more than screen's brightness. If anyone knows of a retina display that is matte, do let me know, please! This video might help illustrate the problem:If watching the video it has occurred to you that working in darkness is a solution, DON'T DO IT! No matter how low you set your computer screen brigtness, it will still be too much of a contrast for your eyes and sooner or later you will develop really bad eye strain. As a first measure, to a person with light sensitive eyes, I recommend not to use a glossy screen (although matte screens are also mirror-like, but to a much smaller extent.)

How to reduce eye strain while using the computer?

The best thing for reducing eye strain while on the computer is to take frequent breaks. Its a tremendous strain on your eyes to be staring at the screen for hours on end, so to ease that strain, take a few minutes every half hour or so and turn away from your computer completely, and focus on objects that are far away (like down the hallway, or out into another room) for a few minutes. Get up, walk around, and let your eyes focus on things that are further away than your monitor. I would to that at least 3 times an hour to prevent eye strain and headaches.

Also, if you wear glasses, and you don't have it already, get an anti-reflective coating put on your lenses next time you need a new prescription. Its a lens treatment that allows light to pass through the lens, rather than be reflected off the surface, which produces massive amounts of reflection and glare, which is also a major contributor of eye strain. And you get tons of glare on your lenses from the computer screen, even if you have a glare protector on your monitor. An anti-reflective coating will greatly reduce this problem and it is a MUST HAVE for people who use a computer at all. The coating also virtually eliminates glare from any light source...so its great for driving at night, its great for students in school under those horrible flourescent lights; its actually a very functional coating that everyone who wears glasses would benefit from. Just be careful of the brand of anti-reflective coating. There are some very cheap and crappy coatings that scratch almost as soon as you expose them to air! Ask for a good, strong anti-reflective coating, like Crizal or Zeiss. They are a little more expensive but they last a lot longer than "El cheapo" brand.
