How Do I Tune My Ukelele

I can't tune my ukulele!?

Lachlan M,
If you have friction tuners they may be slipping. Take a screwdriver and tighten the little screw on the end of your peg and then retune.
Try tuning it to this.

If this doesn't work try this next site.

Look on the right-hand side and you'll see different tunings. After you access the tuning you want, access the note on the pitch pipe and tune your ukulele to it.
Then after you've tuned your ukulele access a chord from the "chord type-writer" and hit the "pick" below the strings and you'll hear the chord.. If you've tuned correctly and have the correct chord fingering http://www.meleukulele.com/PDFs/UkeChart... it should sound just like the chord you've chosen when you strum.

If all this fails buy yourself a Lanikai LU-21 or LU-21C. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?q=ukulele&st= Both are nice ukuleles with gear tuners (like those on a guitar), sound nice, and real easy to tune.

Good luck,

Can i tune my ukulele into a bass?

If you have a "low G" set of strings you can tune your ukulele two octaves and five hafl-steps above a bass. A four string bass is normally tuned E-A-D-G. To have the same relative sting relationships, tune your ukulele to A-D-G-C.

Otherwise your strings will be flopping all over the place. The diameter and composition of the strings along with the length of the string on the fretboard determine the range of notes it can be tuned to.

There are some ukulele-size instruments with "very fat" strings and a beefed up body that are played and tuned as a four-string bass. Most require a pickup since the notes that low don't carry well.

How do I tune my ukulele for this one Tiny Tim song?

I'm trying to play Living in the Sunlight by Tiny Tim on ukulele and it says on the website that the tuning is A D F# B. I'm a little confused--am I tuning up or down? I think it's down, because his uke sounds very twangy, almost like a banjo, but when I tuned my uke I had to tune way, way down, and then I wasn't sure.

Does G become A, C become D, F# become E, and A become B?

Or does A stay A, E become D, C become F# and G become B? Music is hard and confusing. D:

Why does my ukulele sound out of tune?

There are several possible reasons your uke could sound out of tune. Some involve your lack of knowledge, and some involve the actual instrument. Let's start with you. Assuming the instrument is correctly tuned, you could be pressing the strings too hard or bending them sideways when you press them. Maybe you're not fingering the chords correctly. This is all stuff that we can't see, so there's no way of knowing.

Then there's the instrument. Inexpensive ukuleles are *notorious* for having bad intonation. While Makala is a decent beginners brand, the Shark is a very cheap model. You can check the intonation by checking that the open string and the same string being fretted at the 12th fret are the same note (exactly one octave apart) If the fretted note is flat or sharp, the intonation is off and the instrument will never tune correctly.

If the uke goes out of tune after playing for a few minutes, it may just be new strings. Nylon strings do a lot of stretching before they stabilize. Just be patient and keep re-tuning as necessary. A normal "right handed" uke is tuned GCEA with the A string being closest to the floor. To play lefty (not recommended) just tune backwards. Because both of the outside strings are high pitched, you *may* get away without taking the strings off and reversing them.
