How Do You Clean White Gold Plated Jewelry

What is a good way to clean white gold jewelry at home?

actually you can use what jewelers in the trade call a slurry its basically a mix of pure baking soda and water apply it with a soft tooth brush also there is the commercially sold cleaners but thats more for the stones and only removes surface dirt from the metal the baking soda will do small amounts of polishing so the metal is actually shinier of course if your trying to clean your white gold jewelery because its starting to look yellow its probably not dirty at all its just the plating coming off and if thats the case then you should take it to a local jeweler to have it polished professionally and re rhodium plated that should only cost you 20-30 per ring and will last a long time as well as making your jewelery look like it did when it was new hope that helps you

Can people tell if you are wearing gold plated jewelry? Vermeil?

If it's the same karat as your pendant you won't be able to tell the difference - it only shows up if it's lighter/darker and it obviously stands out. Please remember that vermeil WILL rub off eventually. You can prolong its life by taking good care of it - not using harsh chemicals to clean, storing in a soft, cotton pouch away from sunlight, removing when showering/swimming/jogging etc.
What you really need to think about is, do you want an investment piece that will last you a lifetime (ie. real gold) but for which you will have to pay a little more now, or something that will work for you in the present but which you might have to replace later?
Hope this helps.

How do you clean gold plated things?

Gold plating helps give a classy sheen to all sorts of things--from trumpets to faucets to lockets. Part of the reason gold is so precious is because it`s rather malleable, which means that cleaning it can require a gentle hand to prevent damage. Luckily, common sense and patience will see you through.

Things You’ll Need:

Chamois cloth
Microfiber cloth
Dishwashing detergent
Tarn-X or other specialty cleaner
Cleaning Gold Plating

Step1
Maintain your plating: gold plating can be damaged by sulfides in human sweat or by chlorine and harsh cleaning solutions. Gold-plated instruments, of course, should be cleaned after each use. Wrap jewelry in a chamois cloth
when not in use, and keep instruments in their proper case.

Step2
Give a good, initial wipe-down of your gold plating with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Rinse your plating in hot water and gentle dishwashing detergent, and let air dry.

Step3
Buff with a microfiber cloth, or a specialty gold polishing cloth. Scrub lightly: gold plating can be quite thin, and potentially removed or scratched with too much friction.

Step4
Remove persistent tarnish with a specialty cleaner like Tarn-X (available at most hardware stores).

Useful Tips for Cleaning Gold JewelleryWhile your skin may have adverse reactions to certain metals, gold is a wonderfully inert metal that even the most sensitive skins do not react to. However, it is often combined with other metals such as lead or silver though when making jewellery, and these metals are not as non-reactive as gold. Can gold plated jewlerry rust in the shower?

Gold-plated jewelry is made by a covering of a base metal. The metal is usually silver, with a very thin layer of gold. Since the gold layer is so thin and reactive with silver, it will eventually wear away despite your best attempts to preserve it. The wearing away can start as early as a year but it really depends on if there is another layering separating the silver from the gold. A copper barrier will probably be the best to preserve the gold as long as you can. The gold will still eventually come off but it will take a lot more than a year to do so.

I hope this helps someone. Gold plated flatware should NEVER be put in a dishwasher. If it's true gold plating over silver plate or sterling the best way to clean it is to wash it by hand using warm water and mild soap and then, if it isn't shiny enough, take a small amount of baking soda [linked by editor to product info at Amazon] on a damp and very soft cloth or sponge and gently rub the flatware. This will brighten the gold without undo wear. The key is gentle. Even with baking soda if you rub too hard you can scratch the gold surface.Know more here : Gold flatware set
