How Do You Sleep With A Leg Immobilizer On

HELP! is it dangerous to sleep with..

I dislocated my knee cap once, and had to wear a knee brace (the velcrow kind?), I slept with it, and it was fine. Just sleep on your back and don't move the leg (at least try not to).

Knee Brace while sleeping?

The brace supports the knee during weight-bearing. You should not need it while asleep.

If you are not sure give your doctor a call.

I am an RN.

Sleeping with a knee brace cut off my circulation, will my swollen foot get normal?

Do not do that again. Maybe next time just wrap it lightly with an ACE bandage. This will clear up if you leave it alone and try to get the blood flowing, but not hardcore. You need to walk around on it and massage it to get the blood flow back. Try doing leg lifts on just that leg. That is a good one if you cannot walk it off. Also when resting keep your leg pointing down. Like when you are sitting normally in a chair.. That same position on the leg.

Swelling in lower leg and foot?

Your experiencing peripheral oedema which is simply a build up of fluid in your leg. It sounds as though it could be a blood clot caused by the extended immobility. however because i dont know your history i cant be entirely sure, peripheral oedema manifests in a variety of conditions including Deep Vein Thrombosis.

What you have done is good but you can try the following

1. Ensure the leg is elevated above the heart or elevation will be less effective (this will assist with venous return)
2.Try wearing a long, tight pair of socks similar to TED stockings. (This will also assist in improving venous return).
3. If you are able to move your affected leg, try to exercise it. Rotate your ankles plantarflex your feet (See sources for information on exercises you can do). Try to do these every 2 - 4 hours.
4. Take some aspirin at your own discretion
5. MOST IMPORTANT! Go to your GP as soon as possible and speak to him/her about the possible underlying cause. Get it treated!

Remember no advice will constitute that of a doctors! Go immediately to hospital if you experience any difficulty breathing or chest pain.

Good luck and I hope the problem alleviates soon! :-)
