How Does One Rate Serious And Thoughtful Answers To Silly Questions

Why do dumb questions on Quora generate the most answers (except for this one because Quora's AI algorithm is not going to like it and will push it low down the question pipeline)?

Because everyone just loves sarcasm. Idiotic things no matter where or what on the internet get viewed alot. Whether for laughs or to say”Thank god I am not that stupid”. A2A bot also gives out questions like that because of similar questions we already answered. Such as I asked “whats the most powerful thing in the world?”. A day or 2 later I get referred to “Whats the most powerful superpower in the world”. It assigns a digital profile for you based on topics you like. The ones I see get the most answers are dating, movies, spy etc.

85% most people are actually that frigging dumb

Hyphothical - and please thoughtful answers only?

Hypothetically, if you were to have a conservative East coast and a socialist West coast, and assuming there was a free exchange of information between the two coasts. With in two years the West coast would also be conservative. That is also assuming there is not a wall to keep the socialist participants on the west coast. My reasons for saying this is the poor and disadvantaged will migrate west to take advantage of the social programs, while the wealthy socialist will migrate east to avoid losing his wealth to the system. Therefore, the socialist west would not be able to sustain the system for lack of money, and at that point even the disadvantaged will head east to find a job.Now if you assume there is a wall to keep the socialist in the west, the wealthy will either go broke supporting the system, or will corrupt themselves and the system to maintain their wealth at the expense of the disadvantaged. Either way the system will collapse. I left out the leaders, because it really doesn't matter who is leading as long as the core beliefs of the party are intact. As far as crime, unemployment, social services and security goes. The west would be great for social services for a while, empolyment wouldn't really matter in the west, because the govt. would take care of those that didn't work.Crime would be higher in the west because although everything is provided for you, you always want more(example, post Katrina, New Orleans), National security would be fine until the government couldn't support the troops. The East would be much as it is today, with the exception that there would be fewer disadvantaged because growth would be allowed and natural resourses would be used instead of exported to the west coast.(ie oil, food, electricity). I am assumeing the divideing line would be the Mississippi River.

P.S. This is not a hypothetical event. Remember, East/West Berlin?

Why are my questions not answered on Quora?

Why are my questions not answered on Quora??Hello Sameerah Imam,Your question got merged with a lot of others asking the same, so my response may get lost in the noise. Here it is, FWIW.Your questions are too vague. You need to give us something concrete to respond to. Your questions also have an air of self-pity. That's honest; and honesty is a very valuable attribute. But self-pity is not! Let's look at some of these questions. Why this office work is so boring?- vague, self-pity. Why don't you get some backbone and do something about it? "I sit at this desk pushing paper around, bored out of my mind. Should I quit and travel around like @Kanwal Anuvind? But what will I do for money?" 20 people will tell you to follow your dreams, 20 will tell you to keep your nose to the grindstone, and 1000 will tell you Kanwal has a job, he's no bum, and they resent the implication that he is!!!How do we segment internet users?- @Michael Cole's response is right on the money: "This question leaves so much to ambiguity I literally cannot bring on the sarcasm, it just isn’t working. Are you talking about WiFi? Wired? Enterprise networks? Metro Ethernets? Residential? Really this question begs the question, why do I waste the time?"I am confused about my feelings for someone how do I know that I am in love?- vague, confused, unattractive. How about "Sometimes I can't keep my hands off her, sometimes she bores me to tears. Am I in love or just horny?" That would get answered! What should I do when I am feeling extremely bored in my office and have nothing interesting around me?- 7 answers. See, you provided just enough detail to spark a little interest. What should I do when I’m extra hungry and have nothing to eat around me?- 3 answers. A marginal question. Immediate reaction is, why don't you get off your butt and go get some food? Gives the impression of a lazy, unfocused youth. "I'm chained to my desk and can't stop thinking about a burger and fries! What's a good quick snack for the office?"- You see what I mean. Stop floating with the tide, letting life kick you around. Start kicking back. Or at least, pretend to ... that's all the rest of us are doing.Good luck!

Why do people on Quora give political answers to questions that don't actually answer their questions?

“For example, a thread on how to convince an atheist to convert to Christianity got the top answer that went something to the effect of god doesn't exist, you should be an atheist. I find this to be ridiculous.”Any answer like that should simply be downvoted. Any atheist who chimes in with an answer like that on that question is just flamebaiting, as is any theist who made a post directed at atheists that says “you’re going to Hell because you don’t believe in God.”However, there are many instances where answers are given that “don’t actually answer the question” because the question has no valid answers. For example, I had someone get angry at me once because they asked “What would happen if the United States declared war on Poland?” and I answered it by exploring what circumstances would make that even possible. Because the United States absolutely would never declare war on Poland under any realistic current circumstances. I told them it would take a successful military coup by traitorous Polish officers in the pay of an enemy of the USA to gain control of Warsaw, at which point the United States would take military action (if necessary) to restore the legitimate government of Poland. (The loyal men and officers of the Polish Army could probably handle it themselves, actually.)That was the only reasonable answer to what was a silly question in the first place, and there are many examples of that on Quora. Most of the time, I just downvote the question and don’t waste my time with them.

As a viewer, why do you rate (upvote/downvote) answers to questions on Quora?

I upvote for any of these reasons:It is helpful to me or seems helpful to someone elseIt is well writtenIt makes a convincing argument for a particular point (I needn't actually agree with it)I agree with itI learned something newIt made me laugh (but not at OP's expense)It is a good answer but goes against the majority opinion, so is likely to get downvoted by others. I enjoy upvoting these answers as it irks me when people are obviously voting on the grounds of personal agreement/disagreement rather than quality of writing and argumentI downvote very rarely, so far it has been for:Obvious spam (that hacker scam)An answer that seems cruel or mocking towards OP or another Quora userI will never upvote before I have read a complete answer (if it's that good I want to keep reading and will upvote at the end) and never just because it is by someone popular or someone I like. I really can't get my head round why people do this, but I've seen so many posts on it I guess it must happen a lot.

At what point should Quora ban inane question about atheism and atheists?

Thousands of ignorant, questions have been asked and answered yet they continue. Prove atheism, validate, it, explain it. Why did you choose atheism? Will Quora say enough. Should the same question be allowed ad nauseum? Aren’t one thousand thoughtful answers to the same foolish question enough?I hear you man. I feel your pain.Aren’t these questions enough? I guess they aren’t. How many more times must we suffer through obnoxious hypothetical questions?Unfortunately as long as Quora is around we will continue to have these questions.I have a theory, and I don’t know how I would test it (I’m not a Quora employee), but I believe that a large plurality of users (I’m gonna ballpark it at 20%—that’s pretty big) come on to Quora just to ask one inane question about something and then leave when they don’t get an answer confirming their bias.I firmly believe this happens all the time.I see at least 10 questions a day that are trying to (in some way) prove/support a bigoted, sexist, or even racist viewpoint.Questions like this span religion, sexuality, sports, technology, generation gaps, gender, race, and politics. Heck even movies receive some oddly bigoted questions. Can Quora ban these questions? I don’t think they really can.People ask, and then the Quora bots or moderators act accordingly if they see the need to, or the question gets answered. In some cases the question gets deleted. Just the other day this happened. I answer a question where the OP wanted to justify a bigoted point of view on homosexuality. I answered the question, as did many others, and these answers were good, but then the question was deleted.Sometimes I think that the answers CAN help a person see the illogic of their question, and other times (and I have no way to know this) it probably just agitates the OP, and they leave, or continue creating offensive content and receive repercussions, or we just don’t hear from them again because they were anonymous.Either way, what solution would there be to this other than to ban questions completely? I don’t see how we’d meter it out, unless each question was hand-evaluated by a human before being posted, and I don’t think Quora has the staff to accomplish that task.I feel your pain, but I think were stuck with the inane questions for the time being.
