How Far Away Can You Hear A .22 Caliber Gun Being Fired.

How far away can you hear a .22 caliber gun being fired.?

So, I recently came into a debate with a friend about how sound travels. More specifically the sound from firearms.

I know that many guns can be heard from very far away, miles more often than not unless the terrain makes things change. But in a situation of flat ground, and pure distance. How far away could you here a .22 caliber gun being fired vs many of the others. I merely am curious because you can shoot a .22 without ear muffs, vs others you cant. Which the sound it makes must be quite.

What kind of damage can be done with a 22 caliber?

a .22 short has 32 to 75 ft lbs muzzle energy.

A really powerful "mainstream" air rifle might make it to 25 ft lbs. There's exotic ones well beyond that.

Are muskets louder than .17 or .22 caliber rifles or shotguns?

I sometimes wonder if muskets are louder than .17 or .22 caliber rifles or shotguns? I know I was 350ft away from a dressed up minuteman when he fired a musket, and it was very loud, even from 350ft away. It sounded as if either a cannon was fired, or something exploded close to me. Are even .17 or .22 caliber rifles or shotguns that loud, or even louder? Or are they not as loud, and will only sound loud if your 100ft or less away from where the gun is being fired?

What makes the noise when a rifle is fired?

You can see the difference yourself. Go to youtube and look up some videos. There are some where people use a silencer but with supersonic ammunition. There are also videos of silenced weapons with subsonic ammo. With the subsonic loads you don't have the crack you would normally hear with supersonic loads.
