I'm assuming you've had a biopsy done - if not, you should. Mammery cancer is not uncommon in older b*tches, and it metastisizes easily. If malignant, the cancer will spread, most likely to the lymph nodes, and then throughout the body. Nine is late middle age for a toy poodle. It's not like she's geriatric. If her health is otherwise good, surgery is a good option for her. If the tumour is in fact mammery cancer, it will need to be removed ASAP. Your vet is probably not setting you up with a surgeon to make money; they probably need to find out if the cancer has already spread and if surgery can still help her. Hopefully, for her sake, it can.
My 13 1/2 year old toy poodle has mammary cancer?
I would like some advice as to what I should do with my 13 1/2 year old toy poodle who has mammary cancer. She is the "love of my life"! She has a tumor which the Oncologist says is a low grade carcinoma (which I do not know what that means since she did not tell me the exact type of cancer). This dr took a needle asperate, and she did not send it out to a pathologist but read the slides herself. Therefore, I'm not sure if the diagnosis is valid. I am afraid if I operate on my dog, and remove the tumor she might not do well under the anesthesia because of her old age. Other than the tumor, she seems to be a very healthy dog. I might add, the surgeon tells me that there is no guarantee that she will not have a return of the tumor, or get another one in a different mammary gland, Is it true that small dogs can live until 17 years old? I would like to know the prognosis of a dog with her problem if not operated on. Would she still live to that age? What would you do? Any answers is greatly appreciated!

And no.Even if you had a blind dog that is not reason enough to have him put down because he can still enjoy a good quality of life given that he is in a familiar and loving environment.
