How Long Do I Have To File City Income Tax

Do have to file for New York City Taxes?

Usually when you file for state taxes it will ask you if you were a full-time or part-time resident of New York City or Yonkers. These are the only two cities in New York State that you have to pay a city income tax. Depending on the amount you lived in either city, the state's forms should determine if you receive a refund or owe the city. Usually the state collects these taxes on behalf of NYC and Yonkers, therefore they already know how much one has paid to the municipal governments. The total amount is balanced on whatever you paid the state. Therefore, if the city owes you a refund but you owe the state money, then you can say goodbye to most or all your refund depending what your tax liability is.

Local income tax on w-2?!!!?

Some cities (like New York City) have a local (city tax).

In NYC, you add it to the state income tax. The state tax forms should include lines for you to input that amount. You won't know if you're getting a refund or you owe until the end of the return.

That amount does not affect the federal return. Only federal tax withheld (box 2) is used on the federal return.

EDIT: I'm not sure where the next poster lives, but in his world you you don't add it to state return.

What happens if i dont file city taxes?

And when and if you owe the city some taxes they will usually find some way to collect the amount that is past due plus all of the additional penalties and interest that will be added to the original amount owed and for failing to file the income tax return the penalties are more and as the Tax Lady has said they have been known to come after you at a later time in your life years down the road.
Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful.

Do I have to pay NY state and NY City income tax if I have passive (dividend and capital gain) income only?

You do not provide enough information. Where do you live?I see that some people with expertise have answered here. Free advice, as they say, is worth what you pay for it.New York State has a contact page for people trying to figure out questions like this. New York State Department of Taxation and Finance: Contact us.If the amounts involved are non-trivial, you probably would be better off consulting a tax attorney or tax accountant. They know the facts and they have standards of professional responsibility that mean that if something goes wrong with their advice, they’ll help dig you out.

How to prepare bellefontaine, oh city income tax return?

Well, you have to go to the municipal building on North Detroit Street (just north of the post office) and pick up the form to begin with. Once you have it, it's a pretty basic form, nothing at all like a federal tax form.

If you need help beyond this, perhaps it would be good for you to contact a CPA to help you figure it out. My personal recommendation would be John Belser at 204 East Columbus Ave. (just down from the main courthouse). Their phone number is (937) 593-3518. However, I don't think this is necessary. The instructions on the form are pretty straightforward.

How far back can a city collect for taxes?

Ouch.

Here's the problem in a nutshell. The statute doesn't start until you file your city tax forms. Most people who live in cities that have city taxes are blissfully unaware there even is a form. They pay their tax via withholding on their paycheck and that counts as filing. When the money isn't withheld (either because the employer didn't, or you lived in the city and worked outside of it, or you were self-employed), you have to file the form yourself.

Short on revenue, taxing authorities are doing their best to find all old money and collect it. Matching processes that once were done by hand are now being done by computer. The cities and states have data sharing programs with each other and the IRS...so they have an easier time identifying people who didn't pay and finding them. Your complaint is quite common.

The nuance with bankruptcy is that you can't have a debt discharged unless you knew about it and included it in the filing. Even if you had known about it, your ability to include it would be limited by the type of tax and when you had been assessed.

Call Dayton and either pay or ask for a payment plan.

If I live in NYC but work outside the city do I have to pay city income tax?

If you let's say work in NJ but live in NYC, you owe money to NY for state and local and NJ will give back the withheld taxes. (The rule is you can't be taxed twice and you must pay taxes to your home state (including local taxes if applicable.) Same applies if you work in NY state but not NYC.Also, keep in mind you may need to adjust your w-2 withholding to a higher % as NJ (or even NY outside of NYC will charge you less taxes during the year than you must pay based on your residence).

Do I need to file Louisville City Tax return?

From the website:“Any individual (resident or non-resident) or business entity (partnerships, corporations, or S-Corporations) who receive taxable compensation [in Louisville] are required to file a Form OL-3 and pay the occupational tax to the Revenue Commission, if due. If taxes are not withheld by your employer or you are engaged in a business, you must file a Form OL-3 each year whether or not tax is due. Business activity includes rental property, sole proprietorships (Schedule C), partnerships, and corporations. Even if your business has a loss for the year, you are still required to file Form OL-3.”

What is the income tax rate on a 100k salary in San Francisco?

You don't say whether your single, married or head or household, so I can't give you an exact number. There is no San Francisco income tax return for you to file, but since you're in California, you will have to file a California state income tax return, Form 540, with the Franchise Tax Board. The tax rate tables are here.  2014 California Tax Rates and ExemptionsAlso, keep in mind that your 'taxable' income should be applied to these tables, not your gross salary.

If you work in New York City, will you pay less total taxes by living in NYC or NJ?

If you live in New Jersey but work in New York City you will pay New York Statenon-resident income tax but you will not pay New York City income tax, which would be an extra 2.907 to 3.876% of your income. If you live and work in New York City you will pay both New York State and City income tax. Sales taxes in New York City are 8.875% whereas New Jersey it is 7%. For property taxes it is hard to say because it really depends on where you live but I'd say New York City property taxes are generally higher than most (not all) northern New Jersey municipalities. Gas taxes are higher in New York than New Jersey for sure. For the sake of completeness, if you smoke, you will pay $ 5.85/pack in New York City versus $ 2.70/pack in New Jersey. In fact, a lot of New York City smokers purposely stock up on cigarettes when they are out in the suburbs (in the rest of New York State it is $ 4.35/pack). I don't smoke or care much about cigarette taxes but I thought I'd throw that in because I think you'd have to be out of your mind to buy cigarettes in any of the five boroughs, but a lot of people still do.
