How should I handle court date for traffic violation?

I just went to court recently for something far worse than what you did - failure to stop for a school bus flashing red light. This is supposedly the mother of all traffic violations other than running over someone. I have had a clean driving record the past several years.

Here's what happens:
You go to court. You will be sitting in the courtroom with about 30 other people who had various tickets. The clerk will call your name and give you a sheet of paper that offers you to plea bargain. They will offer to cut your points in half and reduce the infraction if you have a good record. Mine was a 6 point violation and they cut it down to 2 points and called it "careless driving." $60 dollars plus court fees and my insurance won't go up as high as if it were the full violation of failure to stop for a school bus. People with good records receive some leniency in this example. Don't even worry about making up a reason why you were not guilty or whatever because you won't need it! Don't worry about cops showing up and stuff, that's only if you want to fight it and request a later court date because you were clearly not guilty. You can take a chance that the cop won't show up on your later court date, but you may be stuck with a full fine if he does.

The cop's advice was right. Go to court and accept the lesser plea bargain. After you accept the plea and sign the sheet and give it to the clerk, the judge will come in 15 minutes later and then call your name and read it back to you and tell you the reduced cost. If you just pay it through the mail then not only do you pay the full fine, but you'll be hit with more points and running a red light on your record instead of something minor like "equipment violation."

Everyone with a good driving record who gets a ticket should read this.

Will state farm raise my insurance for a failure to stop at a red light?

It depends on which state you live in, and if you have ever had any other minor moving violations. You should probably call your agent and ask.
