My budgies mate and I haven't provided a nest box , But I find the female budgie not so active and kind of tired , staying in one place and so I thought she might be carrying eggs , But today I saw my female and male budgie mate again .. So two questions -

1.Does female budgie mate when carrying eggs
2. Does a female budgie carry egg when there is no nest box , I just want to make sure she doesn't get egg bound ( She has beem plump , so I am not sure if she is having egg or just becoming fat )

My female budgie keeps laying infertile eggs?

Info found in an article:
"Female budgerigars can lay eggs without a male partner but these eggs are unfertilized and will not hatch. This is just like the eggs that chickens lay, which are later sold at supermarkets. A female budgie will lay her eggs on alternate days.[17] After the first one, there is usually a two-day gap until the next. She will usually lay between four to eight eggs, which she will incubate (usually starting after laying her 2nd or 3rd) for about 21 days each.[18] Budgerigar Parakeet hens only leave their nests for very quick defecations and stretches once they've begun incubating and are by then almost exclusively fed by their cocks (usually at the nest's entrance).[19] Depending on the clutch size and the beginning of incubation, the age difference between the first and last hatchling can be anywhere from 9 to 16 days."

I would guess the other bird is either younger or (if that is not the case) fixed.

Female budgie laying eggs .but has no male in with her?

It is very normal for a female budgie to lay eggs even when a male is not present. They will not be fertile, but you should not remove them from the nest she has made. Budgies are notorious for chronic egg laying and can seriously harm themselves trying to replace any eggs you take out of the nest. She will deplete the calcium stored in her bones until she becomes very fragile. What you should do is feed her a calcium rich diet including cuttlebone, eggs with eggshells in it, and spinach leaves. Leave the eggs alone and eventually, when the 18 day incubation period is over, the hen will become bored of her nest and then you can take away the eggs. Don't worry about them rotting, because unless they're broken they will not rot. After this, you need to take precautions against her laying more clutches. Rearrange her cage toys and perches so she feels like she’s in a “new” environment and let her receive less daylight hours. Try covering her up earlier in the evening. Also, if she feels she has more than enough food, she will think she can raise babies. 2 tbsp of feed (whether seed or pellets, whatever your choice) a day is fine for a single budgie. Also, don’t forget the supplemental fruits, veggies, and cooked foods. Even if you take precautions to keep your budgie from laying, some budgies are simply persistent little buggers! You will just have to accept this fact and make sure she stays on a calcium rich diet in order to keep her bones strong and healthy.
Sidenote: It is very important that you watch your budgie’s activity closely while she’s in the process of laying a clutch. Birds, especially budgies and cockatiels, can become easily egg bound. Basically that means the egg is “stuck” inside her oviduct. You will be able to see this if she is panting or straining to lay and nothing comes out after a few minutes. If this happens, there are a few home remedies you can try, such as rubbing a little olive oil on her vent area, but if the egg does not pass within an hour or so, she will require immediate attention or she can die. I’ve included a link on egg binding for further information.

How long does it take for a budgie to pass an egg?

I read on one site about 20 minutes or so (that is after the initial 24-48 hours of the egg forming...)...is this true? Should the egg pass quite quickly through the vent? I have a single female budgie who has laid one egg, and now I can see her after two days trying to lay the second egg, (looking ruffled, straining and lifting her rump area from time to time). Just wondering how long I should expect for the egg to come out, whether she is egg bound or not in which case I take her to the vet, or whether she is likely to pass the egg successfully because she has already laid one egg?

Thanks,
Mio

How long do budgies take to mate?

Some budgies will lay their eggs one or two days after mating. Some budgies take longer than that to lay eggs. For example, some budgies lay eggs around 10 days after mating. As for the actual act of mating, that only takes a few seconds.

How long does a budgie carry eggs befor laying when they have been fertilised?

Once a budgie will generally lay an egg once it has formed inside of herin about 3 to 4 days, she dont need to have a mate to lay eggs. She can lay anywhere from 1 to 7 in a clutch. If she does not have a mate dispose of the eggs, make sure you have a cuttlebone in her cage to keep up her calicum. I do have a word of warning to anyone who uses cuttlebones, while the front part of the bone is good and pure calcium the hard part of the cuttlebone is dangerous to birds and can be lethal, reason is because the hard back of the bone is not digestable, it can cause an impaction in the bird's gizzard ot sharp parts can rip the insides of the bird while it is passing though the digestive system.

Is it true that sometimes female budgies cant lay eggs and end up damaging themselves?

All egg layers, whether bird, fish, reptile, can get egg-bound. Sometimes it is because they lack the stimulus to lay, having no males. Sometimes it is because they have no satisfactory place to lay. In the case of budgies, I'd consult a bird vet, or local hobbyist. If I remember correctly, when I had them (half a century ago), putting a bowl of steamy water nearby and bathing the bird's vent with oil was recommended. I suggest you check online under eggbound budgie. There are lots of vet websites.

What is wrong if a budgie hen does not lay eggs, fertile or infertile?

I know that some respiratory or antiparsetic medication can make budgies infertile.I know that some breeders intentionally make budgies infertile. Are you sure your cock/rooster/male isn't the problem ?Have you seen him actually get ontop successfully and did she allow him to continue his business ?I find that the older the cock/rooster/male is , the easier he gets his way with the hen.I had a couple that were platonic lovers , the male wasn't interested or didn't know how to do it .I had a fierce female budgie that I bought and had to separate her from the big cage and since I did I decided to put a male with her.The male was freaked from her , for 3 days she would jump next to him and he would fly so fast away he would bang the cage , and while someone was putting in a dish of Vegs he fled the cage , we searched the house and assumed he flew out.Next day somebody saw his droppings , were he spent the night and remained , he was missing for around 36 hours without food nor water , we put him back in the cage with her and they ended up becoming an unbreakable couple.I dont know if it was the separation or the starvation but that night in less than 5 hours of returning him to the cage they were doing it.

Just saw my budgies mating. How long will it be until my female lays an egg? How will I know when she’s ready to lay an egg?

Females will look for nesting site and prepare nesting site to suit them. Like chipping of path entrance to make it bigger.. And will not allow any bird near the nest other than its mate. Then it will rarely go out except for food and some break. Mostly it will remain in nest.It will take one to two weeks to lay eggs depending on when you saw them do.
