How Long Does It Take For The Pain And Swelling To Go Away From Having A Tooth Pulled

How long does it take for swelling to go down after I've had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled?

The swelling is different for each person but usually starts to diminish after the 3rd or 4th day. You can safely use some hot damp compresses (damp hot towels) to help relieve the swelling and discomfort, place them on both cheek areas and allow the heat to penetrate soothing the muscles where all the swelling is located. As the heat relaxes the joints, start to open and close your mouth gently, stretching a little wider each time. This exercise will help get the good oxygenated blood flowing back in these swollen areas, helping to heal, reduce the pain and inflammation.

Additional information: The swelling should start to go down on the third and fourth day, the openings or holes will heal by filling tissue in over the bone area first then slowly laying layers of tissue covering the complete hole. You may find this will leave an indentation or small hole which can take several months to fill in completely; you may always be able to feel a slight dent where the tooth was.

How long before swelling goes away for an abscessed tooth when on antibiotics?

I had a real bad toothache & went to have the tooth removed because my face began to swell and the pain was unbearable. Long story short after seeing 3 different dentists in 2 days NONE of them would remove it due to the swelling. Problem is NONE of them gave me antibiotics or pain killers either. I went to the ER in severe pain with the left side of my face swollen Thursday and explained my "catch 22" that I was getting from the dentists. They gave me Penicillin for the infection and Vicodin for the pain. Saturday the swelling was twice as bad and was spreading more so I had no choice but to go back to ER (which they fully understood why I came back). They changed my prescription to Augmentin 875mg. Problem is that it does not seem like the swelling is going down at all. How long should it take with antibiotics for the swelling to go away? I want to have the tooth extracted but no one will do that until the swelling is gone. Not only that but I am having a hard time eating and I am already underweight due to a high metabolism (and it just runs in the family) and I don't want to lose anymore weight. I have been trying to gain weight for awhile and what I had gained in the past month I have lost in the past few days with all of this. Thank you for any help.

How long does the pain after getting wisdom teeth pulled out last afterwards?

Hello,

The swelling will be maximal 24 to 48 hours after the surgery, and will then slowly resorb. In some cases, a little bluish coloration can be visible, but it
disappears rapidly.

Normally, the pain will last for 5 days, but will already be much bearable by the third day.The procedure is totally painless. The recovery is eased with light analgesics, and normally uneventful. For the first days, you have to chew only simple food (soups, omelets, things like that) but you'll come back to normal within few days.

For your work, if you're job is answering the phone, 5 days of break might not be too much. If you are working as an auto mechanics, 3 days shall be sufficient!!!

Close your eyes, relax and get it done!

How long does it take for tongue swelling and numbness to resolve, after wisdom teeth removal? It's been two weeks since the surgery and there has only been slight increments improvement so far.

If your tongue was actually swollen it would be very rare and you would have to consider infection but in removing thousands of wisdom teeth I never saw an infected tongue. Most likely the numbness is making it feel swollen. Most numbness goes away on its own within a couple of weeeks but I have seen it’s last for decades. Even if your is destined to last a long time you will eventually get so used to it that you forget it’s there. Right now you still remember that it felt normal 2 weeks ago but after a while it will be the only feeling you remember. I had patients who when asked if their lip was still numb would feel it with their teeth and finger and say I think it is but hard to tell. Most likely, it will stilll resolve in the next few weeks weeks anyway but have the surgeon check it out.

How long after lower molar extraction does the pain and swelling last?

A dental extraction will leave an open wound, and as with any wound, there will be some degree of pain and swelling. The pain normally sets in after the local anaesthetic wears off. It should be tolerable without painkillers and at most, feel like an annoying naggy feeling that wont go away. Of course, pain is subjective, and everyone perceives it differently than others. Hence to be on the safe side, your dentist would normally prescribe you a mild painkiller. For a routine, uneventful dental extraction it should take about 2 - 3 days to recover. At times it may stretch out to 5 days because some wounds heal slower than others. Any longer than that, and if the pain increases in severity and swelling wont subside, you may have developed dry socket and you may want to go back to your dentist to get it resolved.
