It depends where you live, The animal itself isn't expensive, I bought mine for 8 US dollars, but the cage can range from 12-50 dollars. The food can be bought from the local supermarket for about 1.50 dollars but if you get a proper fruit and dried veggie diet from the vet or from a pet store it can be a bit hefty. The wood shavings can be bought at the supermarket as well for very cheap, 3-6 dollars depending on how much you buy. You must get them a water bottle and food bowl which depending on the material used can range from 2-4 dollars (both) . Depending on the cage size, you must clean it at least once a week. For when you do this, you should get a plastic ball for them to run around in, which usually costs about 1 dollar. You should also get a little igloo or house sort of thing for them to sleep in as well as the bedding to put inside of it. That ill cost about 1.50 dollars. the most expensive part is the cage and accesories, but you can find a good used one in the classified ads, garage sale or at a thrift store. my best find was at a garage sale where i picked up 2 cages, a maze, a hamster ball, and lots of tubing for only $5!!! there are deals to be found. the hamster food and bedding is quite minimal in cost, too. i would say less than $5 per month. if you keep the hamster in your room, be prepared to wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of your hamster running in the wheel. you may want to put the cage somewhere else at night. you'll love having a hamster as a pet. they are an inexpensive, low-maintenance pet. and they are just so darn cute!!!!!! :o)
