Is a 1740 an alright SAT score?

It is an "alright" score. However, you'll want to take it again if you want to get into a decent state college. Unfortunately colleges care more about math and reading than writing, so your scores aren't very impressive. I also suggest taking the ACT. My SAT score was fairly low, but I managed to bang out a 29 on my ACT.

Is 1740 on sat for tr first time good?

It's pretty good for the first time test. The national average is 1500, so it's good that you're already over that. As for which section is more important, no section is more important than another by default, but not all colleges use the Writing section, so sometimes it can be detrimental when the Writing section is significantly higher than the other two sections. That being said, you should still try and raise that score since most colleges use it, but just bear that information in mind.

How hard is it to get into college with a 2.9 GPA?

See, it depends to which college you aspire to go in. There are many colleges and as long you pass school you will get into them. As long your goal is to go to any college you will be fine, so long you have above average to excellent SAT scores. Now if you are aiming reputed State colleges then you are probably in for a disappointment (unless you are of course URM)Another option will be to go to CC ( Community College). There you can just sign up for coursework you feel comfortable with and maintain 3.8-4.0. With great grades you will be able to transfer into a good 4 year college.

Is it hard to get into University of Minnesota - Twin Cities for an average profile from India?

In my work with students, I generally recommend they download the Schoold app—it’s free for Apple and Android, and once you’ve made a profile, it gives you a strong sense of your admissions chances. I like using this data because it comes from test scores published by the National Center for Education Statistics, in conjunction with GPA data provided by the colleges themselves. With a 44% acceptance rate, your chances of admittance are high if you meet or exceed the following averages: an SAT total between 1740 and 2100, and/or an ACT total ranging from 26 to 30. Primary factors in the admissions decision are GPA, standardized test scores, and class rank. Secondary factors include personal achievements, community service, and recommendations. Minnesota residents, out-of-state applicants, and international applicants are all evaluated equally. However, international students who are non-native English speakers will need to demonstrate a command of the English language by completing the TOEFL exam. (The average admittee achieved a score of 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL.) However, if you scored a 430 or higher on the SAT critical reading portion, you may be exempt from taking the TOEFL.
