How Much Do You Tip In San Francisco

San Francisco Restaurant Tax and Tip?

I think it is stupid to do that.

Don't get me wrong - I'm the first one around here to speak out about over tipping - but it really is nitpicking to inquire about the benefit package of the server when deciding what kind of tip to leave. The server didn't look up the personal financial information of your friend before deciding what kind of service to offer.

And the "health fee" DOES NOT GO TO THE SERVER. In goes to pay for health care for the worker or is sent to the city to help pay for community health care.

Disagree all you want with what the restaurants are doing with that fee (is is the CHOICE of the restaurant to list it on the bill...they don't list the electricity bill on there, too? Do they?) but DO NOT TAKE IT OUT ON YOUR SERVER....write your local city council person if you disagree. But your friend is taking it out on the wrong people - the server does not control the laws of the city nor what the restaurant chooses to do.

Do you tip less in San Francisco?

I tip exactly 15% of the pre-tax amount at all meals in SF. I wish I could tip less and say, tip my nurse, who I feel is far more underpaid for the work she does than a waiter, but neither is socially acceptable, so I just stick to the 15%.

How much does a waiter in San Francisco make?

Working in the Peninsula for many a year, my frame of reference might be limited. But I have friends in the industry and gather what I make is pretty close. Lots have to do with what “ house” you work at. If fortunate enough to work in a smaller non corporate unit , that's the ticket. One can be un see the radar for the mandatory tip,out reported to Uncle Sam. After tipping out to bussers and bartenders and hosts in some cases I believe walking out CONSISTENTLY with between $130–160. The paycheck which now is bout $14.00|a hour will be around $300 net after taxes and tips reported. You can survive. Again consistently and knowing your getting the shifts and hours. These numbers IMO are median tips earned after tipping out. Of course friends of mine are daily walking with 2 bills. I think though little longer shifts side work and the like.

i'm not sure, but i would guess they're saying that san franciscans are so stuck up they think their gas doesn't stink. so by their implications, you couldn't do this unless you are an actual san franciscan. sorry.

Is it misleading for restaurants in San Francisco to suggest tip percentages on top of fees and taxes vs. just the subtotal?

It’d be misleading if only a few places did it and there was a hard and fast rule about whether tips were calculated based on the pre-tax amount or after-tax amount, but there is no such hard and fast rule… some people do it one way, some the other, and as long as you’re at least in the generally accepted range (15% to 20%), it’s all good.Personally, I usually tip on the pre-tax amount via the “roughly twice the tax” rule, which is pretty easy, so the whole “suggested percentages” thing doesn’t register much. How to handle the weird small print health-care/benefits surcharges that many San Francisco residents have added is kind of an iffier case, since it’s still going to the restaurant. Ultimately, though, the difference between 20% on the after-tax and 20% on the pre-tax isn’t going to be big… it’s like 2%, or $2 on a $100 bill. The difference between a $15–$16.50 tip (15%, perfectly acceptable) and a $20-$22 (20%, a little more generous) is still bigger.

How much should I tip for a $300 move?

I'm moving tomorrow from a 2 bedroom 1st floor apartment to another 2 bedroom first floor apartment about 20 minutes away. I went through a moving service. The total cost of the move is $300. On the agreement, I am padding and shrink wrapping everything myself. They are only loading and unloading. They alloted me for 2.5 hours time... how much should I tip the 2 guys that are coming? I want to say $20 each, but that seems a little ridiculous with me doing the padding and wrapping. What do you think? $20 each, more, less?

For wedding photographer at San Francisco or California, do people pay tips to them?

Photographers generally don’t receive a tip at the end of the night or when they depart. This may be because their work is only partially done and the relationship between client and the lead photographer continues for months after the wedding. Most wedding professionals will do their best to educate clients that gratuities are expected at the end of the wedding night, not to mention for work done by vendors before and after the wedding celebration ends. As a planner I always include a line-item in my budgets for gratuities that lists where that money would go. It is always up to the client to decide if they’re going to tip or not. Many people who come together behind the scenes to help pull of a fantastic wedding (or party) are hourly employees of larger companies hired to deliver and install key elements for a wedding or party. And with photographers, it is common for the 2nd or 3rd shooter to have been hired on a daily rate for the wedding day.In those cases where a client is so happy at the end of the night they will go out of their way to be generous and tip those people who might not otherwise been tipped.Tipping still is at the sole discretion of the client and is always appreciated but not expected by certain vendors.
