How much does a private figure skating coach cost?

Well, since you said you're just a beginner your coach will probably cost about $30 per half hour. But you have to pay for the ice time. Most people have a half-hour lesson and then practice for half an hour. You can get a private lesson coach at any time. I know 3 year olds who have private coaches, but I also know people who are in Freestyle 4 and they just do group lessons. Some people get a private coach when they have been stuck on a level for awhile, or some just get them when they feel like their group lessons are moving too slowly. It's really up to you. When I first started skating, I just went to a pro shop and they had an over-the-shoulder skating bag. You can just go to Target or something and get a small bag; that's also personal preference.

Good luck and happy skating :)

What is the average cost of figure skating lessons?

It definitely depends on where you are taking your lessons, what kind of lessons and who the coaches are. I teach group lessons on weekends and our club charges $95 per 7 week session, each lesson being 45 minutes. I also teach private lessons, but I only charge $15/half-hour. My coach charges $24/half-hour. Coach's rates usually depend on how accomplished and experienced they are. If you are a beginning skater, I would highly recommend taking the USFSA's Basic Skills classes. They are very well organized and you can decide if you "love" the sport or not without spending a ton of money. Then when you have decided how serious you are about skating (if you want to compete, test, etc.), then I would look into finding a private coach, which you can do by asking other skaters at your rink who their coach is and if they are happy with them or not. You may find that some skaters even have more than one coach for other things such as ice dance lessons, moves in the field and choreographers. Best of luck!

How much does the average figure skating Regionals competition cost?

To attend a US Figure Skating sanctioned Regional competition as a spectator will cost as much as the admission tickets, meals, souvenirs and any other expenses such as travel if the event is not in one’s home town. Tickets are usually sold for individual events as well as for the entire competition. Expect to pay about $10 for a single ticket to one event and several hundred dollars for the better seats for every event. At the recent US nationals, single tickets were as low as $12 and the top packages $1,298 per person for the week-long event. For a single competitor, there will be an entry fee for each part of the compeyition (i.e., singles, pairs, dance) Go to the http://USFigureSkating.com for those figures for the competition season. Regionals are generally held in October, followed by sectionals a month later and then nationals. In addition to the entry fee, there are travel expenses, including hotels and meals for the skater and family and his or her coach coach, costume fees with skating dresses alone costing $500 to several thousand dollars, the cost of skates ($600 and up), and other expenses like a video of their performance or even of the whole class in which the competitor skated. Sectionals is the shortest competition which cuts hotel and meal expense and usually the skaters wear the same outfit they wear at regionals. Nationals is the longest event, depending on how the schedule is made up and often skaters will have different costumes for nationals. To have a top competitor, can range to $40,000 per year and higher. Many of the elite skaters also have college tuition or at least tutors if younger. There is some help from US Figure Skating and often there are skating angels who help back a skater from their area but for the most part, the burden is on the skater’s parents.

Why is the cost of figure skating so expensive?

Its expensive, as you have to pay for private ice time, coaches, dresses, competition entry fees, ballet lessons, skates, skate sharpening fees, equipment to improve your skating, basic skating accessories, travel costs to get to your competitions, etc... Basically, you really have to commit. In truth, it is worth it, as you gain an extraordinary skill and it is really fun!

What is the figure skating gala exhibition?

The gala or exhibition takes place usually at the end of a competition and is basically a show with the best (medal winners) skaters of the competition. There are no constraints to what the skaters show, usually they will perform their exhibition Programm. The exhibition is a much beloved part of competitions for the spectators since the skaters are much more relaxed and skating only for the spectators and don't have to focus on technical difficulty. In fact many people prefer watching exhibitions if they don't know a lot about figure skating elements and just want to enjoy nice performances without the sometimes stressful atmosphere of the competition.  Finally, the exhibition is much shorter (1-2 hours) than the competition (which can last several hours).

How much do Olympic level figure skating costumes cost?

They can cost thousands of dolalrs. Some of the females skaters who wear designer dresses by designers such as Vera Wang might be wearing dresses costing as much as $10,000. Men's costumes too need to be custom made and depending on the beading or other trim, can cost many dollars. SUch extravagance is not limited to world level skaters however. I have been a judge for 40 years and nearly 40 years ago at a regional level competition in Milwakee, a little 10-year old girl skated out onto the ice in a dress paid for by her grandparenta. It was stunning and as I learned after the competition, had cost $1,000 (consider that was 40 years ago. Not sure exactly what they would cost today but certainly far more than $1,000 and for a low test regional skater not am Olympic conyender). In fact, I hever saw that little girl again in competition so I assume she gave up competitive skating shortly after that year.  Only one person ever makes it to the top rung of the podium at nationals let alone the Olympics. Thousands may have auch dreams as youngsters. Even more parents have such dreams for their children. That is nice if it also is the child's dream. Otherwise, the child might have more success in a swimming pool or on the soccer field or tennis court or at public speaking.
