How Much Transmission Fluid Does A 1987 Chevy Astro Van Take

How many quarts of transmission fluid does a 2002 chevy blazer take?

Take or use?

You only get about 25% of the fluid out by dropping the pan, so about 4-5 quarts. Transmission uses about 16.

In other words, you aren't changing anything, you are just making 75% of your transmission fluid slightly less old. Only way to change all the fluid out (which isn't really possible without just disassembling the transmission) is to take it someplace that can hook the cooling lines up to a machine to swap old for new fluid, but it takes far more than 16 quarts, as unlike an engine, the fluid gets all mixed up even as you add new to the old.

If your fluid is black, take it someplace and pray the transmission lasts. Black fluid=internal damage no matter what. To what extent, it's anyones guess. If fluid still looks good, leave it alone, as you can't change but 25% of it anyway.

1992 Chevy 4.3 LT Astro Van Check Engine light?

I asked my brother, he's a mechanic. He said to take the van to Auto Zone, Advance, or any other mechanic shop and ask them to hook it up to the scanner. They do it for free. He said it could be your O2 sensor, or under your steering wheel, or it could be a number of problems, but your best bet is to take it Auto Zone or Advance, cause it could be something that can't be fixed or you don't necessarily have to get fixed. He has an (2) Astros himself. Hope this is useful. My opinion, from dealing with my own car problems, is that it might be the O2 sensor, but I'm not a mechanic and my brother is certified.

Good Luck.......

How long does it take to repair a head gasket?

You don’t repair a head gasket, you replace it.Once I had a rally car - a bit of a ratty old junker if the truth be told - that had a 2.3 litre overhead cam engine. It was a bit like this, only this one is way nicer:Anyway I was heading off to do a rally on some Friday night. On the Thursday, the day before, I took it out for a blast around the lanes to shake down any last-minute faults, and blew the head gasket. It was too late to do anything about it that night, so next morning, I got up at the crack of dawn, stripped the engine down to the point of having the head off (it was OHC, so that involved also removing the cambox, timing belts, etc. plus the exhaust manifold, inlet manifold and carburettors) By then it was almost 9am, so I drove to the nearest big town - 25 miles away - to get a replacement head gasket set. 25 miles back, and by 10am had the head all cleaned and ready to be reassembled. Engine back together and running by 12pm, I then had to drive it 250 miles to where the rally started. It all went smoothly and I made it with plenty of time to spare. So the answer to your question, for me, on that occasion, for this car, was about 6 hours, including an hour to fetch the parts. Sometimes what you need, apart from the basic skills, which in my case don’t amount to all that much, is a great big incentive! As I recall, the rally ended in disaster, but that’s another story.

How do you find a brake fluid leak or bad master cylinder?

To find a brake fluid leak... look under the car. Any wet spots? If you find one, get a little on your finger and smell it. No particular smell? Gingerly taste it, then spit it out. Spit again. Once more. If it's brake fluid, your mouth will suddenly have gone dry as if you had tasted alum - because brake fluid is extremely hydrophilic. And... you will have found a leak. If you get under the vehicle (please don't do this unless you have something very solid and thicker than you under the vehicle with you), look directly above the wet spot. You should find the dripping spot, and it'll coincide with a brake line (thin steel tube or pinkie-sized rubber hose). The leak will be either there or a short distance uphill (along the brake line) from there. Not all leaks are in the brake lines (but that's a common place for a leak to develop, as the brake lines rust through); some leaks can be found at the wheel, in the caliper (disk brakes) or the wheel cylinder (drum brakes). In this case, you'll be looking at the inner sidewalls of the tires for wetness that looks as if a dog had lifted his leg on the tire (but there's not enough room under the car for a dog to do that). The wheel with the wet tire sidewall is the wheel with the leaky caliper or wheel cylinder. To identify a bad master cylinder... press the brakes. If the pedal stops, then gradually falls away under your foot... or if it never stops but simply goes to the floor, then you have a leak, a bad master cylinder, or (only if somebody has worked on your brakes recently) a brake system that very badly needs bleeding of air. Check for leaks as above, and check the master cylinder reservoir to see if it's still topped off. If the reservoir is still completely full, don't bother checking for leaks - you don't have one, you have a bad master cylinder. If the reservoir is not full, you very probably have a leak.

Is it safe to drive a vehicle without power steering fluid?

No it’s not. While you CAN drive without it, the potential failure could result in stranding you on the side of the road. Anything built in the last 15 years most likely has a serpentine belt system that powers all your accessories. When you run out of power steering fluid, the bearings in your power steering pump no longer have lubrication available to keep them cool. Those bearings will fail, the pump will seize and that will result in your serpentine belt to fight against one accessory that is no longer moving. The belt will fly off the engine and all other accessories, water pump, A/C, alternator etc will be powerless and your vehicle will shortly cease to run from overheating or dead battery.

Car leaking orange liquid?

You have to see where it's coming from.

Rust in the radiator can make the coolant look orange or dirty transmission fluid can look orange instead of red.

Also, power steering systems use the same transmission fluid, so it doesn't necessarily mean it's coming from your transmission.

A lot of times when transmissions leak it's a transmission/coolant hose that goes from the tranny to the radiator, you can probably pick up the new part for $50. but you should look under the car while it's running to find out exactly where the leak is coming from.
