Can being a cab driver be a good job?

Cab Caveats: Potential Drawbacks to Taxi Driver Jobs

- The work can become repetitive over time.
- Prestige and respect are often low.
- You can't always control pay. Much like a restaurant server, you're at the mercy of the enterprise on any given day.
- Safety is sometimes a concern. Most cities have ordinances requiring cab drivers to accept fares, even if they think the potential rider looks suspicious or the pickup/destination point is in a rough, crime-ridden area.
- The public often has limiting stereotypes about drivers: that they're male, newly immigrated, reckless, or just plain grubby. As a side note, my cabbie pal in NYC said that his cleanliness, education, and friendly demeanor have earned him larger tips because he defies the conventional stereotypes of a taxi driver. So, depending on your situation, the stereotypes can work for or against you.

If can picture yourself behind the wheel of a yellow cab, ferrying passengers around the city you know so well, it's certainly worth investigating a career as a cabbie.

Valet driver requirements?

To be a valet, there are no special requirements. You must generally be at least 18 year old and hold a valid driver's license. No special certifications or insurance required, the company takes care of insurance.

I was a valet for a couple years in college. The only thing my company looked for was that you didn't have a terrible driving record. I had a couple speeding tickets on my record at the time, but they didn't seem to mind.

How does taxi drivers get American visas?

As a guy who used to own a taxi company, I can tell you that money talks. However, many cab drivers that are foreign are illegal aliens, and many don't even have a drivers license, so be careful. I always did a complete back ground check on drivers including finger prints, drug tests and back ground checks. If they didn't measure up, they didn't drive for me. It was funny that when I would tell applicants I did this, many took off running. I worked in the chicago market and like New York it is very corrupt there. Many of those drivers, for years went over the border to Wisconsin because in the past you could get a license without a birth certificate. (Not anymore)

I am now in the same business in Spokane and the laws are the same as for truckers. You have to go through the whole DOT process here. We have very few immigrant cabbies here as a result because they cannot pass the requirements. I love it.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a race issue, just a legal and moral issue. I don't care who comes to the USA as long as it is legal and they don't become criminals here.
