No one under 17 without a parent or guardian. That is the law but is is often broken by the theaters.

An R-rated motion picture, in the view of the Rating Board, contains some adult material. An R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Parents are strongly urged to find out more about R-rated motion pictures in determining their suitability for their children. Generally, it is not appropriate for parents to bring their young children with them to R-rated motion pictures.

Can a 16-year-old watch an R rated movie?

I mean, it all depends on your maturity level and what the movie is rated R for.Movies can be rated R for dropping on F-bomb, and, in this day and age, there is no way a 16 year old has not heard that and worse obscenities several times a day.Another reason way movies can be rated R is for graphic violence/gore, in other words you see at least one guy get beheaded/chopped in half in clear view. Most 16 year olds should be able to handle this.More reasons for being rated R is substance abuse, ok, so the kid sees a actor/actress shooting up or smoking a blunt, it’s not gonna change the 16 year olds view on drugs, if he/she does not do drugs, a movie is not gonna convince them otherwise and vise versa. Another reason is nudity, which is the one really concerning point for a 16 year old watching R rated movies and when the maturity aspect of it comes in. For a movie to be rated R for nudity it, first of all its actually showing stuff, not like in PG-13 movies where everyones junk is covered but its implied they are naked. Also, it is going to be a reoccurring thing and/or in a sexual nature. So, it is really up to the parents to decide there, if you are ok with it and think your 16 year old is mature enough, sure, if not, nobody blames you, just choose a different movie or fast forward through the naked stuff. In the end, there are different movies which are rated R for different reasons, I saw saving Private Ryan and the benchwarmers (which I believe is rated R for the type of humor and language) all before I was 15, saving privet Ryan before I was 14 actually, But still have not seen nor want to see Fifty Shades of Grey and I am 17, so yeah, there are different types of R rated movies and its really up to the parents/the maturity of the kid.

I want to go see a rated R movie, but I'm only 15 and no one older than 17 has time to take me. Is the rating just a suggestion?

It’s not against the law, and you can’t be arrested (legally) if you’re caught in an R-rated movie while underage and unaccompanied. (Perhaps for trespassing, I suppose, but not for being some sort of moral miscreant.)I learned about this from the website of the Clyde Theater in Langley, WA (theclyde.net), which will allow unaccompanied minors into R-rated films if there’s a note on file from their parents or guardians — it’s a small town.HOWEVER . . . a movie theater has to maintain a good “face” to the public, so they don’t want to risk any uproar over being too lax about letting kids into movies they’re not supposed to be in. The ratings system was established as a self-protective measure by the industry to keep the government from imposing its own standards. My advice would be to just wait. Pretty soon it’ll be available on one of the online streaming websites. And although it seems like a long time, you’ll soon be 17 and won’t have to wait at all.And for the answer(s) that say you should just sneak in after buying a ticket to another movie: you can call me a snob, but I have never, never done that — it just seemed so incredibly low-class and immature. Be better than that. Don’t be a “sneak,” and don’t get habituated to the excitement of cheating others. It can lead you to bad places. You believe you’re mature and aware enough to handle an R-rated movie (and you probably are), so don’t undercut that by behaving like a naughty kid.
