How old do you have to be to work at the Bronx Zoo in the summer?

I'm 14 years old & I want to know if I can work at the Bronx Zoo this summer. There probably aren't anymore spots left for the jobs they have but I just want to know the age.

How old do you have to be to work at a zoo?

You can usually start to volunteer at the age of 12 and work at 14. However jobs then are working food stands, taking tickets, etc. You cannot work with animals until the age of 18 due to liability.

Is working at a zoo a dangerous job?

Obviously the risks vary from zoo to zoo and country to country. I used to be a zookeeper in the UK - here, keepers do not generally enter the enclosures of dangerous animals. Big cats, bears, rhinos, elephants, and so on are kept separate from people at all times. They will be locked in one section of their enclosure whilst the other is cleaned, food is placed there, etc. In the zoo I worked at, we did enter the enclosures of crocodiles and large snakes, but at least two keepers were always present, so that one could keep an eye on the animals whilst the other cleaned. I know that zoos in other parts of the world sometimes allow keepers to have close contact with potentially dangerous animals - working in one of these zoos obviously carries more risk. The trouble is that even hand-reared animals that have no intention of attacking you do not realize they are much stronger than we are. An elephant or a tiger could easily kill or seriously injure you whilst simply trying to play. Besides which, you can never completely trust any animal - just look at how many people are killed by dogs every year, and they have been domesticated for thousands of years.

If you are concerned about the risks of visiting the zoo, rather than working there, you have much less to worry about. Zoos have numerous precautions in place to protect the public - for example, there are usually at least two doors with several locks between the enclosure of a potentially dangerous animal and the areas where the public are allowed, so that even if the animal escapes its enclosure it cannot get close to people. It's when people foolishly choose to ignore warnings about climbing over safety barriers and suchlike that accidents are more likely to occur. Those barriers are there for a reason - ignore them at your peril.

I want to volunteer at a zoo?

The only way you are going to know what volunteers do at the zoo, and how old you have to be, you have to call and ask. Every zoo is different. Have a look at their web site as well.

You won't get to interact with any animals, no matter how much you want to. Interacting with animals is reserved for paid, trained staff.

I've encountered volunteers at zoos leading tours, standing outside of a particularly popular exhibit and answering questions, or staffing an information booth for visitors. But the only way you will know how your zoo involves volunteers is to call them and ask.
