How To Apply Drywall To Old Wall

Remove drywall before putting up a wall?

If you are putting up a stud wall you can fix the timbers to the dry walling by locating the existing studs and nailing right through the d/walling, but it would be better if you screwed it, this way you avoid causing too many cracks. To build a stud wall you lay down a 4x2 sole-plate (screw it to the floor) you then install the uprights (studs) at 16in centres (can be 18in). These are skew nailed or screwed into the sole-plate and across the top of the studs use the same dimension timber as the sole-plate. A third and two thirds of the way up you need to put in noggins between all of the 4x2 studs to stiffen the wall up. When you leave an opening for a doorway (interior doors are normally 30in wide) the opening should be a shade over 31.5in. (the door casing is 3/4in thick on each side) The width of the casing is dependent on whether you are using plaster-board or other material. I assume by anchor bolts you are referring to the screws I said to use to fix the sole-plate. I hope this lot is clear enough to understand. Anything else that might puzzle just post it and I'll get back to you.

Old house, needs drywall but walls not plumb or square, what to do?

I restored an old hotel built about 40 years before your home. I did sister studs and base plates to make walls straight. I ran a line top and bottom and that told me where the new stud needed to be mounted. It is not hard work just time consuming.

They looked fabulous and straight as an arrow when finished. The end result was so worth the effort.

The money I made off that building when I sold it made it even more worth the effort. Restoring it was fun and I found a hidden room that was like stepping back in time 100 plus years. I invited a museum curator to the room and the last entry found in a daily journal was in 1864. The room was totally hidden until I tore down some plaster. I then found the hidden entrance.

How do I fill a gap between the ceiling and wall (drywall)?

A small spot of damage is best filled with drywall compound and I like to use fibabfuse tape….a patch. Or as others say, painters caulk will also fill a small gap and paint up nicely. Or spackle. If you have an entire wall, then a pro would tape and float the joint. Caulk is not the best solution for an entire wall, but it will work. Be sure to use a damp kitchen sponge with rounded edges to smooth the joint and clean the caulk off everywhere but the gap. Caulk will have a different look than a taped and floated joint, but it will look reasonably okay if tidy, possibly better than an inexpertly floated seam (although drywall mud is easily sanded smooth).

Can you apply drywall directly over old walls?

I'm not an expert, but I have put up drywall. I'd think that it would be hard to do a good job of putting drywall over the existing wall, because you'd have to find the boards, and you'd have to use longer nails to go through the existing wall and into the boards. Also, you'd have issues with putting in a nail and hitting a nail holding in the existing wallboard.

What is the best thickness of drywall for bathroom walls?

I hang and finish a lot of drywall….and I wouldn’t consider using anything but 5/8 inch for anything, if you want it to turn out straight. Not ceilings, not walls, not 12 inch, 16 inch, or 24 inch centers. Not wood studs, metal studs, or even furring on CMU walls. Building codes allow use of 1/2 inch drywall almost anywhere a fire rating isn’t required, but the stiffness of 5/8 is amazing compared to 1/2 inch.Use tile backer board or denseglass if you are going with ceramic tile. They are both mold resistant and moisture proof, far exceeding MR (green board), and have a coating that makes the tile adhere much better than to paper coated boards. DenseArmor actually has a textured vinyl surface tile installers prefer to cement board or Hardiboard for adhesion. Make sure the screws or nails you use are corrosion resistant or stainless, too. I have seen walls that were cracking simply because 30 year old nails had completely disintegrated in the wall.

Dry wall and babies?????

does he put anything else in his mouth that is non-food? does he want to gorge on food? when he does eat, does he seem to 'mouth' the food differently than you typically would 'mouth' that food? there is a thing called pica that is a disorder that causes people to eat non-food items. I have had both a severe case and one case that is not so bad. With the severe child, I could not even put out crayons in my classroom or they were gone. This girl I have this year licks the floor, or will eat the grass on the playground. She is expected to outgrow it. good luck!

Can I replace drywall halfway up a wall and use a seem to connect it to existing drywall?Or will that look bad?

There should be a tapered edge at 4'. Take a sledge hammer and punch a series of holes at around 3' up. Once you punch the backer, grab ahold of it and yank. It will come down in pieces, and should split along the seam. Cut some new drywall to fit, tape and mud the seam, and sand as needed. Prime, paint, and you have a brand new wall. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Hope this helps.

When you drill a hole for a drywall anchor and the drill keeps going and going?

Wow you have something a bit off with this. First, what does the bit have in it when you drill these long holes into the wall? Second, when you screw the dry wall screws in do they continue to pull in and not just spin around? OK lets take this on step at a time. If you can say that there is wood behind the drywall due to the bit having wood and the screw continuing to pull in instead of spin you have some real old walls.? Is your house new or old....if it is new then you are playing with fire using those screws.....Look up on the web what a "MOLLY BOLT" is . I have done construction for years and as far as I know there isn't a stronger fastener for attaching objects to hollow walls..this is what you need for your coat rack. If you do have wood walls then I would suggest you use a better holding screw than dry wall. You should find a small box of #8-#10 deck screws that come in many lengths.... you will use these for all types of stuff at your house....one more suggestion. Try to buy a #2 square drive bit to drive in the deck screws.(buy square drive screws) A lot of people strip out the heads on screws when trying to use them.....the square drives are waaaaaaay easier to put in and pull out over and over. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
