How To Be A Better Group Mate

Do you perform/work better in groups or by yourself ?

I can do both competently, but for most projects I prefer working as a team. I love project teams because of the diversity of people and subject matter involved. I prefer not to be in charge, but am often put there because I'm good at "using resources" effectively, and, as you probably know, in the business world, people really are seen as just resources...

Capricorn Sun at the end of house 10th (Placidus) (so it's interpreted in the 11th), Mars in Pisces in 12th, Saturn in Taurus is 2nd (it's going to get done, dammit), 6th in Leo, 11th house in Capricorn, but with Moon and Mercury in residence..

BQ: When I work in a project environment, we usually cooberate on individual items, and when I'm in charge, I make sure everyone on the team has a stake in the outcome of each part. A good project manager will get rid of anyone who's not contributing, or is dragging down the project, well before the outcome is evaluated.....

My group mates for a project changed the project into something I find morally wrong.. What should I do?

Tell them that you won’t be participating, and why. Then write a signed and dated note to your instructor mentioning the same things: that the project has changed.State your objections, say that you will not be participating, and would be willing to take a zero for the project if the instructor deems it necessary. You could also ask to be assigned to another group if that were possible.Best Wishes,

How do you cope with a group mate that does last minute work for a programming assignment?

“How do you cope with a group mate that does last minute work for a programming assignment?” There is always someone like this into each group and I don’t find it shocking at all.I don’t know if it’s the concept of “democracy” which has turned many people to become so lazy when working into a team. The only solution is to do your own part and never to stress yourself about these kind of lazy people. Some say programming is hard than maths, now imagine leaving everything at the very last minute. This is why many people hate to work into groups because there will always be some who will not get the job done. Yet, they will be the first people to complain for not getting good marks. If I know how to do the assignment then I go ahead and finish everything on my own then wait for others to bring their works. When someone failed to deliver their group work then I fill in the gaps using all the works I did (without letting them know). When presenting the final work just be honest and mention who did the work and who didn’t do anything. This is the only way to outsmart these kind of people. Life is too short trying to please people who doesn’t even care about what they are doing.Good luck!..hope this helps.Thank U for the A2A too.

What should I do if all my group mates are smarter than me when handling a group project?

If they are indeed smarter, then treat them with respect and follow their lead, and be as helpful as possible.Actually, I just read a study that showed that if you are cooperative and helpful and maintain positive social relationship with workmates, you actually are very helpful to a workplace, in fact, more helpful than someone who is more competant and intelligent but doesn’t get along with people. So feel encouraged. You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room to be a good employee or team mate. If you positive, helpful and pleasant, you are contributing.

For classroom group projects, is it better to have random, assigned, or self-chosen groups?

Collaborative problem solving is a 21st work-skill that needs to be practised and perfected in college, if we are to prepare students for the real world that awaits them on graduation. As I see it, there are two primary competencies that promote efficient/effective group work that enhances collaborative problem solving in the 21st century knowledge-age workplace:Leveraging the already established chemistry and trust from existing physically connected networks to efficiently carry out and deliver on assigned tasksWorking virtually but effectively on random project tasks with a group of global specialists, many of whom we may never met in the physical world. So I don't believe there is a better or worse group structure to strictly adhere to as both competencies (working in self-chosen + random groups) are important 21st century work-skills.The case for randomly assigned groupsAs virtual project-based work grows to become a significant component of the knowledge-age economy, the more we need to teach our students the competencies needed to work in randomly assigned groups. i.e.cross cultural understanding and respectprofessional work ethictask rather than personality focused work structuresworking effectively in changing circumstancesbeing assertive in areas of expertiseThe case for self-chosen groupsHowever, it is equally important to teach our students the importance of leveraging the power and capacity of their established existing networks and relationships to solve problems. The individual specialist of the industrial-age is being replaced in the knowledge-age by the individual working with and in their network and these competencies are best developed in self-chosen groups. i.e.leveraging accepted leadership structures to quickly achieve productive outcomesdemonstrating how empathy and giving emotional support to members empowers groupseffectively assigning known skills and knowledge to appropriate tasksdemonstrating how a greater sense of control can lead to ownership and a greater commitment to group success. So I guess it is not so much either/or but is rather more about mixing up the way you build groups for different activities and assessments so that competencies from both group formation types can be developed.

How do I deal with ignorant group mates who do not try to contribute anything in a group project?

Divide the workload and assign tasks for each..  some people dnt like being told what to do.. some ppl wnt act unless their support is absolutely needed.. specially some creative people who see alternative ways are bored with the conventional methods.. so I blv the best thing is to let them do the task the way they want.. however better have a group deadline that's before the project deadline.. so that in case they fail, you would have enough time for a backup plan..  different people are motivated by different things.. needs a lot of observation to identify such inspirations.. task division is the short and practical :)

Genetically speaking, is it better to mate with somebody from your own ethnicity or outside it?

There is a well studied effect called heterosis or outbreeding enhancement: hybrids are often stronger, healthier and smarter than the parent lineages. Although there is no consensus about the existence of heterosis in humans, it is known that the popularity of consanguineous marriages can diminish the average IQ of the population [1]. Some researches believe what heterosis could be a cause of the Flynn effect [2].There is also a plenty of anecdotal evidence of heterosis in humans (a graphic example). On the whole, I would recommend to mate with someone outside your ethnicity/race.    --------------------------Sources:1: Michael A. Why did early humans travel in groups?

Early humans traveled in groups for safety reasons. Think about it, if a predator was out hunting you, you would have a better chance of surviving for two reasons: more prey to choose from(might not be you) also, the bigger the group the bigger the chance you can defend yourselves strategically. Something else everyone forgot to mention is that Humans are very social animals. If you're isolated you can become very mentally ill from lack of socializing. So there's your answer.
