How To Cover Pails With Fabric

I spilled fabric softener all over my carpet. What to do?

It's kinda like spilled milk. Don't worry. You'll just have a soft spot. No pun intended. Use water and a sponge, rinse it like you would your clothing and then pat it dry with a towel. Or you could put a fan on it for a couple of hours. Either way it's no bit deal. Have fun!!

Where do I put fabric softener in my washing machine?

Some washing machines have dispensers for fabric softener, and others don’t. You’ll have to take a look at your washing machine to see if there is a dispenser. Some typical locations include:a drawer that you can pull out, which has compartments labeled for detergent, fabric softener, and bleacha hole in the corner of the top of the machinethe top of the agitator of a top-loading machineThey are usually labeled right on the machine, but if not, you could also look it up in the owner’s manual. If there is a dispenser, then that’s where you put the fabric softener. If there isn’t a dispenser, then you have some options:Wait for the rinse cycle and then pour the fabric softener into the tub when it’s filling up with water.Buy a dispenser that you can put in with the wash. The Downy ball is the one I’m familiar with, but there may be similar products made by other companies. It’s a plastic ball with a stopper. You put the fabric softener in it and close the stopper. The movement will cause the ball to open at the right time and dispense your fabric softener. I used these for years when I didn’t have a machine with a built-in dispenser.Use dryer sheets instead of liquid fabric softener.Use wool dryer balls (thanks to M. A. Steinberger for the suggestion.)Skip the fabric softener altogether. It’s not really necessary.

How to dye jeans black with Rit fabric dye?

Are the jeans 100% Cotton? Or are they a polyester cotton blend? Or a spandex cotton blend? Black works best on 100% cotton fabrics. You are correct, you do need more black dye than is usually suggested.

The best method for dyeing is not always the washing machine! It can dilute the dye too much and you can't always let the clothing soak in the dye long enough. The fibers need to react with the dye and if there's too much water, the reaction won't be as strong. So use a large bucket or pail and fill it partly with hot water. Add a couple tablespoons salt to the water. Dissolve the dye in hot water, if it's liquid add the dye to the water in the bucket. If you can find something called "soda Ash" add that to the dye water. It's available in Michael's craft store in the area with tie dye supplies, sometimes labeled "dye fix". Soda ash helps the fiber react with the dye, it "opens up" the fiber. Pre wet the jeans, never place dry fabric in a dye bath, and immerse them in the bucket. Swish them around until they are saturated and let them sit in the dye. Let them sit for several hours, and then take them out and rinse out the excess dye in cold water. They should be nice and black by now. Wash separately a couple times, and always wash in cold water using a detergent made for black fabrics. I often overdye black clothes to freshen up faded blacks and this is the method I use.

Why do we feel that some materials are colder than others?

remember that your nerve cells can only feel the temperature in your fingers, not in the table itself.Your brain then uses this data in an attempt to understand the table which the fingers are touching. Why make this distinction?Because what we notice is our finger getting hotter or colder. If our 90+degree F finger touches a 75 degree F wood table, the heat will flow from our finger. Our finger will become cooler, and our brain registers this change as reflecting the coolness of the table. But if the table is steel, or marble, at the same 75 degrees, the heat will flow much faster due to the thermal conductivity of that material. Our finger will cool much faster, and our brain will (mis) interpret this rapid cooling as the result of touching something much colder than the wood table. The temperature of the two materials is the same, but they cause heat to leave the fingers at a different rate. We therefore interpret the material touched to be at different temperatures. It works the same way with a hot material - Touch a hot metal or ceramic pot, and the heat will rapidly flow into your finger, warming the skin very rapidly. Touch instead the wooden handle (which may be at the same temperature) and the heat will flow to the skin much more slowly -perhaps at a rate which makes a wooden handle on a tea-kettle  tolerable to touch, where a steel handle may not be.

How do you effectively clean cloth diapers at home?

With the new line of cloth diapers such as kooshies and fuzzibunz, you dont' have to swish them in the toilet anymore! It's so much easier than the ones our grandmothers or mothers used. I'm only 26 weeks along but plan on using cloth diapers. I've gone to websites about caring for cloth diapers and it is recommended that you either toss the dirty ones (after getting rid of the solids down the toilet) into a diaper pail. The pail doesn't have to have water unless you want. Just sprinkle a bit of baking soda in there to tame the smell. Most people machine wash their diapers and then let them air dry. Whatever you do, do NOT bleach them! Here are a few helpful links:

Can bacteria or other life grow in urine if it is left in a bucket for weeks?

I left a bucket of urine out for a long time to see what the effects would be. I am interested because I design composting toilets of various kinds. I am designing better ways to get rid of urine.Brian Fey's answer to What is a pee garden? It appears that life and likely bacteria do grow in the urine. After about two months the liquid was still clear but darker colored. Eventually some small white worms with tapered ends where swimming in it. I tried to move the worms to a fish tank, but that killed them. I might try the experiment again since I am curious what the white worms were.Hopefully it is not a parasite such as this one: PentastomidaI should do the test again. What is this worm? You can see the worms in the video below.Brian Fey's answer to How does urine change chemically when left in a bucket for weeks?
