How To Dress This Plain Simple Dress

How to glam up a very plain dress?

A friend found a prom dress that doesn't fit her and gave it to me. It fits perfect, and I like it, but it's so plain. It's a royal blue/purple or indigo color, and it's style doesn't really look good with a belt. It looks a lot like this: http://resources.shopstyle.com/sim/10/af/10af0105d172a36796cf38ad967a5936/asos-evening-dresses-asos-plain-long-prom-dress.jpg
The only difference is that the hem reaches to my ankles and the neckline is higher and is shaped like the first dress's in this picture:

Any ideas on how to make it less plain, either with accessories or by changing the dress itself?

Is this wedding dress too simple and plain?

I am going to have to agree with Blunt. Pick ups are the puffy bows of the 80s. I promise you will regret that decision by 2015. My cousin owns a bridal salon and is constantly going to fashion shows and speaking with reps for designers. When I bought my dress she warned me that designers are planning to fad out the pick ups by spring 2011 as it is getting very overused.I would steer clear of that. Also, alfred angelo is great and all but I was less than thrilled with their bridal options. Nothing is wrong with plain but I think this dress is very BLAND and the pick ups do not help.

What is a plain dyed dress?

I'd assume it is just a dress which has been dyed in one block colour, as opposed to being tie dyed or another method of dyeing. I.E something like this- As opposed to something like this- Which is created through tying up the fabric in various ways before soaking them and dying them with colour.

How can I fix up this simple dress to make it unique?

My junior prom is coming up in April (yeah, I know, a little far off, but last year I put off buying my dress and...lets just say it was a bad idea) and I'm out dress shopping.

I hate following the social norm. I do. I cant stand not standing out, so I want a dress that reflects that, but, so far, I've yet to find one that I like (I've spent the past couple days searching endlessly through mountains of frills and fuchsia).

Since I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress I won't wear that often, getting a dress custom made is out of the question. I want something cheap, so I figured, buy a simple dress and dress it up!

I've found a very simple plain black dress http://www.hotfash.com/dresses/short_dresses/romantic_black_dress_deep-v_halter_pleated_skirt-showstopper.html that I really like, you know, to start with. However, now I have a new dilemma.

What do I do to it?

I was thinking something along the lines of adding details to it. Like, sewing a little zebra print material to the neck line or adding lace (I'm quite...blessed in the chest area, so I don't want the twins popping out all over the place, I figure, with as low as the neck line is on the dress, I need to add something there to make it more modest).

You guys got any ideas? It can be like one big brainstorm to aid me in my time of need! D:

You can also suggest accessories you think would work (bright tights, hair bows, etc)

Just remember. I want something awesome and unique. I don't like anything too girly so don't say things like diamonds and flowers. Bright and obnoxious always works for me. As does anything random, so give me all the crazy ideas you have!

Thanks, I really appreciate it!

How do you decorate a plain dress?

You can either glue on crystals with this GemGlue stuff or E6000 glue. Or, if you order this specific kind of crystals called HotFix, then you can buy a HotFix tool and use that. HotFix crystals come with glue on the back. The tool uses electricity to heat up the tip of the tool, grab a rhinestone, melt the glue on it quickly within 15-30 seconds, and then attach the stone to the dress. I got a HotFix tool at Michael's Craft store, and I buy 10 gross (1,440 stones) at a time from DreamtimeCreations, an online store with good pricing. You can get the HotFix stones for about $80 per 10 gross, and the tool for about $20. I've gone through nearly 20 gross for about 6 dresses and my skating club jacket. You can also get the stones in many colors, and you can buy 1 gross (144 stones) up to 10 gross like I get. You could get 1 gross of 1 color, 1 gross of another color, and have a multicolored stoned dress.

For designs, I look in my Skating magazine (I get it from being a member of US Figure Skating) at the dresses the skaters wore. The design I did on a totally plain dress I bought for $50 was similar to the design on one of Tanith Belbin's dresses from the 2006 Olympics. I look online as well, at stores that sell dresses already stoned, and at pictures of skaters such as Rachel Flatt, Miki Ando, Yuna Kim, etc.

Does anyone know how to make a simple, plain dress? Even if I have never sewn before?

you can find simple dress patterns at places like walmart or a fabrics store but you still need to have some background knowledge on how to sew... even the simplest of dresses will require you to know things like how to measure yourself for the fit and different types of stitches and how to baste... you'll also need to know how to sew in zippers and how to make button holes and sew the right kinds of buttons for it if the pattern calls for such things... it's pretty easy to do and you can buy a self explanatory book on sewing... but again, you will need to practice how to do the basics firsts before you get into a project like that... it's fun once you learn it and really get started though! hope this answered your question, and good luck with the dress!!!

How could I make a plain black dress look more formal?

Black skater dress.(Thinking),the trick here is to accessorize wisely. Do not over do it neither do not be too subtle with this. The main focus for this outfit here is mostly your hair and makeup.Make sure that your make up is very well done.Opt for sophisticated make up ,perhaps smokey eyes, well done eyebrows and bold lips (but do not overpower the “eyes”).-I will advice you to do a hairdo thats more elegant for this, something wavey.-The accessories would be something that is of gold (depending on your skin tone if you have darker skin tone then silver would work well). Trick here is to be as elegant as possible.Use makeup and hairdo as an advantage.-Search on FAVIM images for hair inspiration and as well as for make up.If you are afraid of being too bold with your lips just simply tone down the bold lips and go for neutral colorsGoodluck!☺
