How To Keep Your 6.0 Powerstroke Running Good

What kind of oil in a Ford 6.0L Powerstroke?

I hate to burst your bubble but the Lucas Oil Stabilizer prevents the oil pump from otherwise lubricating frictional surfaces with a *large quantity of oil quickly during cold starts where over 80% of engine wear occurs..

Think or your drilled water well at home being filled with 15W-40 instead of water. The submersible in the bottom of the well will pump X gallons per minute. Think of the same well pumping a ratio of seven quarts of oil and one quart of your Lucas syrup, till the well is filled. The same submersible will push less gallons of oil per minute.

Please go to the Lucas Oil Stabilizer website. Read what it is and what it contains. There are no EP (extreme pressure properties) such as zinc or phosphorus. There are no detergents. There are no viscosity index improvers (polymers). There are no high temperature oxidation additives.

Rotella now has a full synthetic T6 5W-40 diesel motor oil. Go to their website and watch the movie.

Powerstroke 7.3 vs. 6.0?

the 7.3 does get a little worse mileage but not enough to make any difference. my 2001 7.3 averages 16-20 empty depending on the type of driving and idle time. as for reliability the 7.3 even with more miles is by far more reliable. There are some good 6.0 out there but your really taking a chance and you never know what your gonna get. all the recalls for had out on the 6.0 defiantly improved some of the issues but has not corrected them. with a 6.0 you can count on replacing injectors, oil cooler and egr cooler, egr valve, turbo, or a FICM DC-DC converter, or a combination of the above depending on how long you keep the truck. its almost a guarantee. On the plus side of that engine it is more powerful in the higher rpm ranges. it does not have the low end snort of the 7.3 but once the vgt turbo is spooled up it really runs. its also a much quieter engine and the fuel economy is good. hopefully this is helpful and if you want my recommendation the 7.3 is a much safer bet and I would be looking there. In my opinion there are just 2 many variables with the 6.0 and I don't think you will be happy if you end up with a 6.0 that becomes a money pit.

Is a 6.0 powerstroke diesel a bad engine ??

The 6.0L DIT have had their share of reliability issues, but when they are working right, are very gratifying to drive. The 2003 model years had issues with ICP sensors leaking oil. 2004 to 2007 model years have had EGR coolers failing continuously. 2005 to 2007 model years have had STC fittings blow apart resulting in no-start when hot symptoms, the most drastic of which, resulted in branch tube replacements. 2003 to 2007 model years have had repeat issues of EGR valve carboning up and being stuck open, resulting in black smoke and lack of power concerns.
With all that said, the 7.3L DIT was a much simpler, easier to repair engine compared to the 6.0L. Doesn't necessarily mean they are bad per se. Ford is stepping up to the plate by extending the warranty on these and the 2008 6.4L engines. About the only thing on a 7.3L that will leave you stranded on the side of the road are the CMP sensors, which have gone down in price from a couple hundred dollars, to about forty dollars. This part is only one 10mm bolt away from being changed on the side of the road if necessary. Hopefully, with all that said, this will help you make an informed decision.

Which is a better motor cummings or powerstroke?

personally prefer cummins, but both are ok. worked for both ford and dodge in the service dept. seems parts for the cummins are easier to replace and cheaper to me....

03 6.0l powerstroke high pyro temp?

Put a hypertech max energy tuner on an 03 6.0 powerstroke just got it from a dealer they got on trade in. Was looking for better fuel mileage and am running bigger tires with a four inch turbo back with cat delete. Put the tune on stage 2 and u have to clear all codes first set of codes P0046 P006A P0266 P0460 P0500 P0528 P0562 P1378. Ran fine for a 40 mile trip then the next time It stiil ran fine but the pyro guage is reading higherv used to idle/cool down to 600 and run about 1100 or less when I pulled two bikes. Now its idling at 800 and running without a load at 1200-1300 and jumping to 1400+. Changed tyne to 1 pulled code U0306 still ran the same. Then stock setting pulled P132b and U0306. Then returnd it to the factory setting still running fine but high pyro pulled code U0306 again. Please tell me its a quick easy fix. I do think it has a leak from one of the intake rubber tubes right on top. ???

Should i buy a powerstroke diesel?

I have been looking at selling my car and getting a diesel, Mostly a 02-03 7.3L PSD. I have really be looking for reasons not to buy one but i am really not finding any. I live in Missouri so its cold in the winter but as long as i have a block heater i can leave it plugged in, in my driveway so its not too big of a deal. I also know that oil changes are quite a bit more expensive but if you are going to drive it like i am... I.E. not hauling heavy loads you can go 5000mi between oil changes. Anyone have any reasons i should not buy one? Or good reasons too buy one.

What happens when a 6.4l powerstroke is overfilled with engine oil?

The reason the engine did a runaway was the excessive oil was blowing into the intake system through the engine crankcase ventilation system allowing the engine to burn the oil as fuel. As for the engine damage, drain the oil and fill to proper level, start the engine and see how it sounds, there is a good chance that the amount of oil going into the cylinders was enough to bend the rods during the compression stroke, since the oil won't compress it will either stop the engine or bend the rods, at higher engine speeds it usually bends rods and the engine will make noise. Also be on the lookout for fuel leaking into the engine oil from the injector lines, your mechanic doesn't sound like a NASA rocket scientist and the 6.4L Powerstroke has a lot of special service procedures that have to be followed during assemble to prevent leaks and other problems.

Which gets better mileage, the 7.3 or the 6.0 Powerstroke?

The 7.3L is the better engine. There use to be lots of performance parts and kits for that engine from Banks and Bully Dawg. If you can find the Propane Injection kit for it, do it. It's quite the kit! I have one on my '99 F-250 diesel. It adds lots of HP & torque. I run high 12's with the kit and tuner box. It also makes the engine run much cleaner. If you find the kit and add it in, be sure to add the 4" exhaust system to keep the exhaust temps down. It's been almost 10 years since I added the kit and everything runs great. I also had a '03 F-250 with the 6.0, and wouldn't even think of doing anything to that engine. I dumped that truck years ago, but kept the '99.

BTW, my 7.3L gets 19 mpg. The 6.0L gets 10.5 mpg, that's why I dumped the newer truck.
