How To Publish A Book In The Usa

How to Publish a book? At age 14..?

You can find literary agents that that will help you sell your novel to a publishing house for your particular genre by going to a library and looking for a book called "The Writer's Market." Look for the latest edition that the library has. They also have a website, but it costs about $5 a month to use the internet service. Make sure to follow the directions that each literary agent has when sending out query letters. And don't forget to send a SASE or self addressed stamped envelope so that they can write back to you. Usually if a particular literary agent rejects your manuscript, they may not write back because they receive so many manuscripts and they don't want to bother with writing back to everyone.

Remember: literary agents are FREE until your book actually published. You do not pay them. If they ask for money directly from you IT IS A SCAM. It is not until you novel has been sold to a publishing house that the literary agent gets some of percentage that your book makes. Publishing houses will rarely look at manuscripts directly from writers so a literary agent is your best bet to getting published. Publishing houses usually publish works through literary agents because they would be swarmed with too many manuscripts.

How to publish a book in the U.S.A?

First, write your story.

Edit your book several times to make it the best it can be, type it in proper manuscript form (visit http://www.writersdigest.com to find out what is needed), consider joining a local writer's group to get feedback from other would-be writers, and get it proofread by someone who knows what they are doing (don't rely just on spellcheck). Edit it some more.

There are a tiny number of publishers that accept unsolicited manuscripts (those that don't go through a literary agent), so getting an agent first is a really good idea.

At the library or bookstore is Guide to Literary Agents, published by Writer's Digest, or Bowker's Literary Marketplace (or visit http://www.agentquery.com). Look for agents that specialize in your genre, and are looking for new clients. Read, and follow, their submission guidelines. In those books will be something about writing a query letter, which is what you send to the agent, first. It's part synopsis of your book, and part explanation as to why your book deserves to be published. You have only that one-page letter to wow the agent, so take the time to make it a good one. Expect the whole process to take lots of time, and expect many rejections. When you are accepted by an agent, they will send your book to publishers, not you. The whole process is free, except for postage, until your book is bought by a publisher. That is when the agent gets their cut (usually 15%) of the money which would go to you.

If you decide to self-publish, then you will pay (potentially up to a couple of thousand dollars, depending on which publisher you choose). Also, the marketing of your book is up to you.

Good luck!

How can a 17 year old get a book published?

So, I'm not done with the book obviously but I was wondering how could I get a book published if I'm only 17?.. And the book for me to finish if I keep at it will take me at least 4 months, at least. And the book is a more teen book, and I think it'd be something that teens could relate to even though it's more a fantasy novel. But it's based around finding your first love, and it has true characters etc... but with fictional mysterious chracaters at the same time so I think it'd be a cool series/book. But anyway how could I get it published?.. How does the E Book thing work?.. How could I get it published at like Boarders or something.. does anyone know how I could do this?.. Serious answers only please :) Thanks so much for the help :)

Can I publish a book in the US with an F1 student visa?

A publisher wants to publish my novel, but I haven't sign anything yet because I don't know if it's illegal, given the fact that I live in the US with a student visa.
The school officers told me that I couldn't work on-campus, but I would not be employed by the publishing house, I would just sell my material. Is that illegal? Do you recommend me to change my visa status?

How much does it cost to self-publish a book?

The price for an ISBN depends on which country you live in and (sometimes) how many you buy at a time. Some countries offer them free to all their citizens. In the USA, Bowker (the company that issues them) wants about $125 for one, which is obscene, considering that it's just a record in a database. If you buy them in bulk, the price per ISBN comes down to somewhere more sane.

Some self-publishing companies will give you a free ISBN, but this causes them to be listed as the publisher. Some people seem to think that letting the company do this is the stupidest thing you could ever do, but my attitude is that most of your sales will be ebooks, and they don't need ISBNs. The sort of reader who (a) cares who's listed as your publisher and (b) can work that out from the ISBN isn't in your target audience anyway.

You already own the copyright in the book. In most countries you don't need to do anything more. In the USA, you have to register your copyright with the Copyright Office (www.copyright.gov) if you want to be able to sue someone in a US court for infringing your copyright. It costs $35 if you do it online.

Covers start at maybe $100 for one by someone who's just getting started as a cover designer, up to a few hundred for someone who has a reputation and a queue of authors waiting for him. You can pay a lot more than that, but I'm not sure it's worth it until you know whether people will pay to read your book.
