How To Repair A Ceramic Statute

I just bought a hydrostone statue that needs repaired. how can i repair the statue? where can I buy hydrostone?

I bought a cowboy statue made by J T Ford (a Texan born artist). titled "The Cutter". It's a statue of a cowboy on a horse cutting cattle. The horse has two broken ears and the statue is somewhat attached to a wood base. (it's not bronze...if it was the base would be marble). I've searched the web and was only to find a newspaper article dated 12/ 1/ 76 from a department store in Bend, Oregon by the name of "Brandis Thriftywise" on this artist. His pieces were advertised in this newspaper around the holiday season. The above said piece was advertised in this newspaper for 199 dollars. No other information of this artist is available online. The advertisement said this piece was made out of hydrostone, but it feels like some type of metal to me. It's a "mousy' grey in color and weights about 5-7 pounds. But what I have read on the internet about hydrostone...it's a powder mixed with water will give a plaster look/feel...
The confusion I have is the advertisement of the statue made in hydrostone, versus the statues real feel of metal. If you know of someone or somewhere, where I can take this statue and have this piece evaluated as to what type of material is it. I would like to repair the piece hopefully to its original condition. Thanks for all your help.

What's the best thing to use to repair a large ceramic chiminea that fell and cracked into several pieces?

One possible thing to use is Furnace cement

I am not sure how safe it is in the long run Some brands have contained asbestos

I have used the furnace cement as a patch on a ceramic pot the cement was then encased in glaze then fired to cone 06 or about 1830 degrees F

Different brands vary. this type or repair may work or be a complete failure

How did they used to repair ceramics with staples?

This was done in the days when the available adhesives weren’t up to the job of holding together ceramic objects, especially larger ones like decorative plates and bowls. To repair ceramics with staples, small holes are drilled in to the piece and then the staples are inserted. Typically, the stapling would be done on the less visible side of the ceramic object (inside a vase, on the back of a plate). Then any holes or spaces left in the crack might be filled with a mix of animal or plant glue with plaster or clay dust either coloured or painted over to make the repair less obvious. It’s a nice reminder of how scarce objects used to be, and how precious the flash of colour that a bright clay dish or bowl must have been, before the easy light of the electric age!

Which glue is best for repairing broken pottery?

Many ask for advice and one of the most common questions is "Can I use Super or Crazy Glues to fix my broken pottery or sculpture? How do I choose? It’s so much easier than 2-part epoxies!" There is a misunderstanding about the difference between super glues and epoxy and they are therefore sometimes used interchangeably but, super glues and epoxy adhesives are different and have specific purposes.Cementing While Filling in GapsUnlike super glues, mending epoxies are also a gap fillers. If the broken pieces do not have a perfect fit, epoxy will fill in the gaps while creating a bond between the broken pieces. Epoxies require some “body / thickness” between broken pieces to be effective. Meaning, if clamping too hard, the epoxy will squeeze out which will then make it too thin and therefore the bond will be compromised. However, when used on multiple broken pieces, the thickness they require between broken pieces could add up to your repaired item shape distortion when mending is completed. Why would you want a slower setting epoxy? If you are working on small items that can be secured quickly, the quick setting 5 minute epoxy may be your choice. Spreading glue over larger items may require the slower setting product. Five minutes goes by fast! Slower setting epoxy is generally stronger although some brands have recently improved the strength for fast setting epoxies to be as good.

Does acrylic paint work on ceramic and does not wash off?

Acrylic paint will work on ceramic but isn’t the best because it’s meant for canvas work. Acylic paint is a “polymor” which means its actually more like a liquid plastic. In my opinion I wouldn’t use Acrylic because it would scratch off easily. Additionally, if you wash it the acrylic will slide off much like an onion skin. (That’s been my experience in painting on the outside of coffee cups.)If you use an acrylic paint for a design on the outside of the cup or plate you will need to spray it with an acrylic clear coat will produce highly glossy dishes that are pretty to look at, but not safe to place food upon.Using a no-bake ceramic paint pen will allow easy, quick designs on dishes that are safe to eat and drink from, but which won't last with sustained regular use.Using bake-on ceramic paint will produce fairly glossy patterns that are safe to eat and drink from, and that in most cases should last for years.Hope that helps ;)

Is there a solution for repairing floor hardener that has become very cracked?

I am not sure what a ‘floor hardener’ is. Photos?I think you may be referring to a self-leveling substrate product like gypcrete or the like. Your options are limited because any additional self-leveling products will add height to your substrate, causing problems where the finish flooring meets thresholds, doors, and other flooring materials. You may be able to remove the broken chunks and spot apply some gypcrete up to the same height as the surrounding original substrate. Gypcrete does take a while to cure, which may be an issue. There are other products out there which cure faster and still maintain a floor assembly’s Sound Transmission Classification (STC) rating. In my office, we've been using Schonox, which goes down like the magic shell ice cream topping. It will adhere to the existing gypcrete and fill any gaps. Before using anything, ensure that you do, in fact, have a gypcrete substrate atop your concrete or wood decking material. If not, then refer to your local building supply store or post some photos.

How is plaster of Paris used outdoor?

I know that generally the plaster used in the decorative arts is plaster of Paris, which is a form of calcium sulphate.Plaster of Paris, sometimes called plaster, is a powder-based material that, when mixed with water, creates a material that hardens much like cement. Plaster of Paris is an extremely porous material when dried, and as such, will absorb any new water that touches its surface. In order to waterproof plaster of Paris for outdoor use or for temporary exposure to water that it is a waterproof material you must fill in as many surface pores as possible. Spray the entire plaster of Paris object with a clear sealer or shellac to protect the paint job. Let the sealer dry before placing the plaster creation outdoors. Plaster of Paris is ideal for use with molds and an excellent choice for relief-carving projects. Tools needed for relief-carving plaster of Paris are minimal. Plaster of Paris works well with most types of paints, allowing artists to apply a variety of techniques to create beautiful finished pieces.
