How To Socialize An Adult German Shepard

Is it smart to adopt a 1 yr old german Shepherd?

I am thinking about getting an adopted gs but I cant get a pup because I have to go to school and will my parents will be at work,so from 7-3 it will be life alone.I am just wondering will a 1 yr old adapt well enough?

Can my Adult Male German Shepherd Live With my wife's Male Doberman Puppy ?

I see no reason why they can`t live together.

I got my latest male gsd at 8 weeks old (he is now 19 months old) and he lives with my older 10 year old male. Both intact. No problems.

Introduce them on neutral ground and take it from there.
Its very unusual for an adult dog not to accept a puppy...but it has been known so take things slowly and carefully until your certain the gsd is ok with the puppy.

Add: The older dog may chastise the puppy if it oversteps the mark.
You should allow this as long as its just mild...like a "look" or a growl.

Can my anxious adult dog still socialize?

Some dogs, for whatever reason tend to have a personality as you've described.  I grew up with one.  He was adopted at about 3yrs old and we have no idea if he was mistreated or just that way or a combination of both.  We loved him just the same.  He was to the extreme that if given the opportunity he would snap at an ankle or hand if  a stranger came to close to him or to a family member.  Needless to say it was our responsibility to love him and keep him as safe and stress free as possible.  We accommodated  his quirks  until he left us at the ripe old age of 17.  So many silly memories of that guy.  I am getting teary eyed just thinking of him.  That was many moons ago so we did our best on our own.  Maybe some evolved training today he would have acted differently.  But he was fine and loved and seemed happy.I have friends (a couple) that adopted a German Shepherd at age 5 a couple of years back.  He likes other dogs but not people.  He is aloof and beautiful but even with his owners prefers limited contact.  That's the way he is.  He comes to parties but avoids pets even from his owners.  He is a good guy in a good home.My dog is like glue to people and hangs out with dogs but prefers people above all.  They are all very different.  In the case of your Husky, they are generally very affectionate with people and other dogs but the early socialization period is key since they are pack dogs and it's best if they learn that early on.  Maybe try a `thunder coat'?  I am happy to hear that you are excepting and sensitive to your dog's quirks as well as concerned.  I am not a pro trainer so maybe there is something else you can try.  Dogs have feelings and are, as we know socially happy but in some cases it might be best to live and let live if they seem OK and enjoying the good life.

Can a nine-month-old German Shepherd, unsocialized, and aggressive to other dogs be saved?

Yes, ABSOLUTELY!! First you must commit to TIME , PATIENCE and POSITIVE rewarding. Find a GOOD TRAINER who does NOT use prong, choke, eCollar or any other type of punitive method. You can begin simply by finding something that your dog loves to do - like fetch a ball, carry a stick, etc. and encourage your GSD to learn to carry the object on the walks. This will help with distraction, ownership and something in the mouth “for a job to do”. Working dogs like to be challenged by having a JOB. But even this takes TIME - do NOT expect magical results in one week - it could take up to a year . Integrate this together with training and socializing. DO NOT skimp on a good trainer who should also offer controlled socializing/play sessions. You’re lucky to start with a younger dog. It has taken ME 4 1/2 YEARS to change the horrible behaviour my 1 1/2 yr. old rescue came with but now she is the BEST little girl I could possibly ask for and I’m so grateful we persevered.

How do you socialize a 3 year old dog?

The first is that your dog is trained to mix socially with other animals, and the second is so that he behaves in a way that is acceptable in society and within the household as a domestic pet.
When socializing your dog it could be done properly and in a comprehensive manner so a young dog could be socialized by the age of 9 months. However, he will always be meeting new people and experiencing new things, so socializing is really an on going process throughout his life.

How are German Shepherds with cats?

i've had a few shepherds and cats that live fine together but it depends on the dog and how well u train it.
IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A PUPPY a shelter dogs can be great pets... why does everyonre think u have to get a puppy to get along with other animal u already have. u must be willing to walk a dog any dog daily. most shelters help u pick the right dog for your lifestyle.

Would a German Shepherd and a Siberian Husky get along well?

It doesn't matter to the dog what breed they are. A dog just sees the other as another dog. Some dogs just don't like each other. They all have personalities just like we do. What matters is the individual dogs and whether they like each other or not. Introduce them in a public place with both dogs on a leash and let them get acquainted. If you have a grown dog and introduce a puppy the grown dog will often raise it without a problem especially if the adult is a female. If the older dog is old enough that it is sick or frail then that dog might not get along with a young one. Two puppies usually get along great except if both have very leader of the pack mentalities in which case they might butt heads but will usually work it out on thier own. Two puppies at the same time is a huge amount of work and training. If one develops bad habits the other will follow its lead so you have to stay on top of it. It's like raising two young kids at once. Hope this helps.

What is the hardest part about having a German shepherd?

They shed a lot (birds molt) But you can help control the shedding with a high quality food and a good daily brushing. I would suggest that being done outdoors when ever possible. Between those two things you can greatly reduce the amount of dog hair all over the house. REDUCE, not eliminate.

They are great dogs, smart, loyal, easily trained. My favorite dog in my whole life (65 yrs) was a Shepherd.

Name a breed of dog that looks like a german shepherd but smaller. It must weigh less than 40 pounds.?

From wikipedia: "Female Malinois are said to average 25-30 kg (55-65 lb)"

Thank you to those who have answered... It doesn't have to look exactly like a german shepherd, just similar, it does have to be under 40 pounds.
