How To Start Dc Comics

Where to start reading DC comics?

I've always been interested in DC comics, love Batman and all that... but I just wouldn't know where to start reading them. I obviously don't want to read them all, and more recent ones would be ideal (I'm not saying that they have to be from like 2000-present, they can be before that). Plus, knowing all of the heroes' stories from the beginning would be great for me.

Basically, I'm interested in Batman, the Robin variations, Superman, The Flash, and maybe some more. Where do you recommend I start?

How do you read comic books chronologically?

I really want to get into reading DC Comics in the correct order, but I'm not even sure where to begin, does anyone know a suggested reading list or a site that can help me out?

Where to start with comics and the New 52?

I got into comics earlier this year and picked up a few series. I thought the New 52 would be a good opportunity to really get into the DC universe as getting new readers is the whole point. I've read the new issue ones that related to the Robins and Flash family and the big ones like Justice League, Action Comics, Detective Comics, etc. Some made perfect sense and others completely did not.

Spoilers.

What kind of timelines are in the comics? Action Comics looks like it's starting way way before the Superman before the reboot. Justice League seems really weird too since it seems a League never existed and they were all meeting and discovering eachother for the first time. It also seemed in a lot of them that Superheros were more like urban legends and almost criminals to the public which confuses me because of the whole Batman Inc. thing. And in Batman & Robin everything is just peachy and practically nothing has changed (other than Bruce being the only Batman again be we all saw that one coming).
I vaguely understand what happened in the crisises but are they still in continuity? Are the comics even on the same Earth? Is Flashpoint considered a crisis event since it does seem like one of the most important moments in DC history. And why are all the characters so much more sexualized now? Or were they just like that before and I'm only noticing now?

To understand what's going on in the new comic books which ones should I go back and read/research?

Sorry for really long question.

How do I start reading comics?

start with 'Marvel Now', their reboot. Best from Marvel comics are the Daredevil, Spiderman and Avengers issues. Captain America's are pretty average, so is Iron man's. Your question just proves how these awesome marvel movies are bringing audiences to read the comics. Another tip: I read both Marvel and DC and don't get me started on which is better (they're equal) though right now, I'm loving DC's issues. More grounded and well...better. Cheaper as well. You want DC? Start with issue 1 of New 52 Batman, Batman and Robin and Aquaman. Best issues. You really should read the first issues. Like a watching halfway through a movie.

Ultimately, Marvel and DC reboot their universes so they don't get so convoluted every so decade so for Marvel, start with Marvel Now and for DC start with the NEW 52. I don't think you should read any comics that were published before the 2000
