How To Tell What Voltage A 63 Vw Bug Needs To Turnover And Start

What does system fault workshop mean and why did this happen?

Not as simple as Ca Surveyor says.
I agree that it sounds 100% like a failing Battery. BUT, its not as easy to remove and install as some may think. Its actually under the drivers side seat frame. And its a much larger battery then the average car uses, so the cost is much higher. Its covered for 4years, 50,000 miles under your Bumper to Bumper Warranty. That is of course as long as it fails the MidTronics Test that the dealer uses.
I would see if you can stop by the dealership on a walk-in basis and ask to have the Touareg written up and repaired that day. Jumping a Touareg is a sensitive deal. they have been know to not liking to be jumped too many times. there are MANY on-board control modules that can suffer a voltage spike and cause it to fail. If the dealer is informed (by you of course) that you have jumped it a few times, they may decide to to cover the damaged modules. Now I haven't seen them deny any coverage like that at my dealership, but it could happen.
As for the radio, yes its in SAFE mode because of the lose of battery voltage. Its like removing the radio and discharging the radio's capacitors. They can and should look up your radio code when they replace the battery since they get paid for that step under warranty as well.
Make sure your windows are set for Auto up and down, clock and date set, radio unlocked and programmed, and all warning lights that were illuminated due to Low System Voltage faults. All of this is covered by your warranty and the tech does get paid to do all of those courtesy settings.
Any other help with this, just update your question.

VW bug won't start, no noise from starter (battery is fine)?

Battery #1 (get it load tested) It may turn on the lights but that ain't the starter, is it? It may be new and it still may be a junk battery.
Starter solenoid #2 or check to be sure all the wires are connected to it and that means crawling under the car and have a physical look.. A small black or green wire (which comes from the ignition switch) needs to be connected to a tang right there on the starter solenoid.
Distributor is not the problem otherwise the car would not run(which it does).
You are off by the 5%. It is either 1 or 2. Nothing else.
And the factory wiring is strong enough. Remember, it is 30+ years old and connectors made out of brass corrode (turn green) over time and may need a bit of sandpaper to make them work like new again. Nothing more is needed.

Why is it that the battery light is on when the car engine is off?

Just to be 100% clear, the battery warning light:is on when the engine is off. This is normal, because what the battery light indicates is that the system voltage is below a certain threshold (something like 13.5V, well above the nominal battery voltage but below the charging voltage). A belt connects your engine to the alternator, which in turn charges the battery by applying a slightly higher voltage (usually 14V-14.5V).In this case, the cause is obvious: the engine is not running, so the alternator isn’t spinning and the system voltage is low.If this light comes on when the engine is running, you do have an issue. It could be a wiring issue, it could be your serpentine or alternator belt that is broken, or it could, of course, be the alternator itself that failed. It could also be caused by a bad battery. If this happens while you are driving, it’s important to not panic, to not shut down the engine — since you may not have enough energy left to turn it back on, and to make sure it’s not the serpentine belt that’s broken. A broken serpentine belt usually results in heavy steering, since it’s also connected to the steering fluid pump. This is important, because a broken serpentine belt will no longer drive the water/coolant pump, which in turn means your car’s engine will no longer be properly cooled and can thus overheat. If the serpentine belt is not broken, you can usually still drive for a bit to a repair shop nearby to have it fixed. With some older cars that don’t rely on electronics for the fuel pump and injection, you can keep driving without any issue (of course, starting will still remain problematic). If the serpentine belt is broken, your car may overheat very quickly, and it is better to pull over and have it towed.
