No, you don't need a ticket number to look it up. All you need is the confirmation number (AKA booking number, AKA PNR, AKA Record Locator) and I'll bet that it is in the email. It's even in emails about held, not yet purchased reservations. To answer your original question, the change from "purchased" to "ticketed typically takes 12-24 hours, but I've seen it take less time. Or more. By the way, if you can't look it up how do you know it's in "purchased" status?
