How Would I Get The Green Onion Bulb Out Of A Normal Store Bought Onion

I planted onion bulbs that I bought at the grocery store that were already sprouting. Will they give me more onions?

Your onion sprouted bulbs have completed half of its normal cycle, that is becoming a BULB. Next half of its life cycle is to produce seeds. Once planted you will get some large onion greens and a flower stalk. Eventually, it will produce a bulb too, but not a good one. You can just harvest the greens and use it like green onions. Let it ripe and collect the seeds. Save the seeds to plant for scallions, not for bulb onions. Starting and growing onion from seeds is too technical, but planting for scallions is simple, just like planting chives.

How do you tell the difference between a green onion and a regular onion?

Green Onions are picked early in the stage life of an onion and have green tops. The regular onion I assume you mean is what happens to most onions if you let them keep growing and the bulb develops below ground.

Im not femilure with N Indiana climate but here in Oklahoma "the great state of confusion" I have seen wild onions and wild garlic. they both form bulbs on the tops of the green shoots. But I believe the garlic bulbs when cut wont look like the onion which is usually semitrical with the layers garlic has ecentric bulbs and are usally more that 1 bulb per plant. The tops also are eddible I believe.

What is the green plant growing out of an onion?

Yes the green part of it is where we get scallions. Quite a few foods we eat we'd be surprised what & how they grow. Technically an onion that we eat is just a bulb (seed) like you'd see when planting certain flowers & carrots are technically the roots of a plant. No need to worry about the green part, you're safe as long as it's not a wild onion like what some people randomly find in their yard.

Why aren't onions green?

First, chloroplasts are essential for the process of photosynthesis. You need to know that the onion bulb we refer to in daily life grows underground, which is not exposed to the sunlight, it only stores food for the plant. And you also need to know, the process of photosynthesis, requires lights. Because onion bulbs are underground, what is the use of having chloroplasts? The onion plants have green shoots where there are chloroplasts. You can simply tell that there is no chloroplast in onion bulbs because they are not green. Onion bulbs just basically shares a similar environment with root cells.

Why do my Green Onion keep growing back stiff (flower stalk) ?

Green onions are like any bulb. Their goal is to flower and drop seeds for the next batch. We're fighting their nature (or not.) The second you see that flower stem start shooting up, cut that off. (Not the leaves, just the flower stem.) OR, let it happen for some of them and consider them the mommies. They will produce your next seeds for your next batch.

Now I'm both a lazy gardener and disabled. One or the other of those two reasons doesn't get me out in time to cut down the stalks all the time. Oh well, we still have something kin to bunching onions, if we just pull them up, flower, stalk and all. ;)

What is the difference between spring onions, scallions and green onions? Are any of them related to leeks?

Spring onions, scallions and green onions are essentially the same thing - cultivars of onions (allium species) that do not form bulbs and which generally have a milder flavor than bulb onions. Leeks are a related allium species that also does not form a bulb, but is more fibrous and grows much larger, but also has a mild flavor. Cold weather generally causes regular bulb onions to have a sharper scent and stronger flavor, but leeks are not so affected and actually prefer cooler temperatures to grow. They are very cold hardy and in mild winters will continue to grow in temperate climates.

Difference between a shallot and an onion?

I was curious....I work in a restaurant. Some pasta dishes use shallots while others use red onions. I know they're in the same family, but when it is appropriate to use a shallot over an onion and vice versa? Are they milder, sweeter? Thank you all!

How do I identify the leeks and green onions?

Cultivated as early as 2500 BC, leeks, onions and garlic share the Alliums genus, and are indigenous to Central plus West Asia. The ancient Egyptians award-winning leeks, and adorned their tombs with drawings of them, while the Roman emperor Nero ate the vegetable in the direction of create stronger his voice, earning him the pet name Porrophagus – leek eater. The Romans spread the leek throughout Europe in the direction of Wales, where it is now the national emblem and is worn on St David’s Day. According to legend, when the Saxons raided Wales in the 7th century, the Welsh identified themselves in fight through wearing leeks on their helmets.Just as dry onions create an important back note in many dishes, leeks and young onions can play this same role – except in a more delicate way. Green onions are best for eating raw, followed by spring onions. Regular-sized leeks should be cut at the junction of the fair part and green. Tops can be used to flavor stocks or enclose thyme sprigs, peppercorns and parsley stalks in a single leaf to make a bouquet grain. Pencil leeks are eaten whole; their tops require only a slight trim. Due to their flimsy flavor, it’s better to cook leeks in butter rather than jade oil – boiling, steaming, sautéing and stewing are all suitable cooking methods. in cooperation the green tops and white bulb of a green onion are edible. Natty about 5cm from the top and chop the green plus white parts separately, as the tops require only seconds of cooking. While the green tops of spring onions are also edible, the taste is stronger, so usually it’s merely the bulb and about 5cm of stem that’s inspired.

Why are there no chloroplasts in onion cells?

Edible part of onion is nothing but scale leaves of underground stem called bulb .Nature is judicious in its creation that the presence of chloroplast in scale leaves of underground part had no use since that part of the plant is not exposed to sunlight .The main purpose of having chloroplasts in the cells of the plant is to facilitate photosynthesis .When the scale leaves of the plant are not exposed to sun light then what is the use of having it in their cells .Recollect the internal structure of root of other plants they are not have chloroplasts in their cellThe internal and external structure of part of the plant body is so created to suit to their function and their position..In onion aerial slender circular leaves bear chloroplastsNote the aerial roots of some of the plants have chloroplast in their roots since they are aerial and exposed to sunlight. Some of the roots of halophytes are negatively geotrophic called pneumatophores and have number of pores in their roots to facilitate diverse function of gaseous exchange.Tespirstive activity is not regular function of rootsWe should realise the precise role played by nature and we appreciate the creative wonder. If anatomy of root is analyzed with its structure and function then we appreciate the radial arrngement of vascular bundles in roots in contrast to stem which is meant for radial conduction water from the root hair
