A couple of points...Apple doesn't really make a lot of money from iTunes song/music content. Most estimates average it around 90/10 split between the media companies and Apple. Which means that of that $5.00, Apple sees $0.50. This one sided split suggest that during negotiations the media companies had most of the bargaining power, and hence more or less set the price. (Note that Apple is comfortable running the iTunes store at break even - they'd rather sell you devices than content. Making that content available to you, even if they don't make any money on it, helps lock you into their device ecosystem.)More customers spending less doesn't necessarily equal higher revenue. Simple example: number of customers times average customer spend equals revenue. So 10 customers spending $5 equals $50 revenue. 15 customers spending $3 equals $45 revenue. (Econonists will give a more sophisticated explanation involving the area under the supply/demand curves, but you get the idea.)Regarding extending the expiration, there may be local factors. Why won't my iPad sync movies with iTunes?
This happened to me a lot when I first got my iPhone. I realized later that the movies I was trying to sync were not of a compatible format. By default, iDevice will sync only mp4 movies. Sadly it did not even throw an error that the format wasn't compatible (I used iTunes 10). Since then, I purchased a movie player app and copy and paste movies directly into the app. You can try VLC player, Buzz Player, G Player for that. I hope that helps with the sync issue.

Yes, this still works great for me in my iPhone 6s running iOS 10.3.1.
