I Got A We Think 2-3 Month Old Rabbit. Should I Worry About Rabbit Fever

Can I get rabies vaccine after a month of dog bite?

You mean to say your vaccination was delayed by one month after dog bite, isn’t it?Every dog bitten is not rabid.Every rabid dog need not die within 10–15 days.Since human life is precious, we don’t take chances and advise vaccine for all dog-bite cases unless the the dog is our own/known pet and is receiving regular vaccinations against rabies.Vaccination is advocated as early as possible after dog bite, as the virus invades the nervous system after local bite at muscular part of the body. The virus then multiplies and travels towards brain/CNS. How fast it travels depends upon the location of the bite, the severity of the wound, the quantity of the virus in saliva etc. Normally, if the bite is on legs or hands, it takes longer time than a bite on face, throat or chest. The clinical signs may appear as early as 3–7 days or as late as a few months and in certain cases even after a year or more. The protection from vaccination is also not instant, After a series of injections, antibodies to rabies virus are developed at the end of the week and satisfatory immunity may be obtained by 15–20 days if the vaccine is of good quality.Hence it is suggested that even if one is bitten very lightly, it is better not to take chances, and get yourself vaccinated even after one month. Better late than never.

What's this about not hunting rabbits in months with an "R" in them?

The saying is the exact opposite - you should not hunt rabbits in any month that does not have an "R" in it. And the saying is virtually correct- you should not kill a rabbit during the summer months- here is the reason why- In the deep south where I live, during the summer months there is a parasite that infests the rabbits during that time of year. It is a large type of larvae that lives in the Rabbits neck between the skin and the neck. This will drop out of the rabbits neck during the colder months. But even when the larvae drops out of the neck, there will be a pocket of pus left there for a few weeks after it drops out. This is extremely disgusting and you just lose your appetite when you are cleaning one and the pus is still in his neck. Or the larvae is still there. In the early months of the fall as soon as we kill a rabbit we feel in the neck area for the bulge that will be there if the larvae is present. If it is, we don't keep the rabbit. They get this parasite from the ground and it does not effect tame rabbits raised in one small area.

What makes a better pet, rabbit or ferret?

I'm trying to decide whats right for me. I love how lop-ear rabbits are and how cute they are, but since I can remember I wanted a ferret. I love how energetic and playful they are. Please HELP?

Buying another ferret?

i'm assuming ferrets are generally already spayed/neutered as kits where you are (or you intend to do so when you get one)? if so, then i think personality matters much more than gender. i've had mixed sexes together, and right now have 2 boys. it's not because these two get along better than a boy/girl combo did...it's just because each of their personalities made for good playmates with each other.

ferrets are such social creatures and they enjoy each other's company so much, it really shouldn't matter which you get. age really isn't a big factor either - my first boy was nearly 4 yrs old when we got his 8-month old friend and they were best friends within days. just introduce them slowly - keep them in separate cages next to each other fora few days and monitor their limited playtime out of the cages for a bit to make sure they're getting used to each other slowly.

Whining baby ferret?

You need to see a vet. A baby ferret should not be lethargic, they are boundless energy. You are right that they cannot get a cold, but they can get the flu(which can be deadly).

If you have a baby that is not running about non stop, than there is something wrong. Most pet stores are not concerned with the health of their animals, they know very little about signs of sickness.

I few years back I got a ferret(I knew she was ill when I got her), she ended up being very sick(I knew since she was lethargic when picked up. She would sleep in my lap, which is abnormal for a baby ferret). I took her to the vet and found out she had the flu and it was a good thing I had taken her since she would most certainly have died. The flu can be very serious and needs immediate treatment.

She bounced back after about a week of TLC and the change in her energy was a 180. She never sat still!

It is a shame that pet stores really seem to not care, or educate themselves on pet care. Many people would have listened to the store employee about the ferret having a cold and not gone to the vet(most because they would rather not spend the money). The only thing out of the employees mouth should have been, I am not a qualified vet, you should make an appointment to see your vet asap.
