How long will it take me to ride my bike 130 miles?

Serious answer? THREE days. I'm not doubting your athletic ability. I'm doubting your "cycling ability". 130 miles will be super rough on the old butt & other body parts if you're not used to it.

What's the furthest you've ever ridden on a bicycle before in one trip? If less than 75 to 100 miles (century ride) I'm sticking with my 3 day theory. Even pure cyclists who take off across something like the Katy Trail in Missouri (237.7 miles) figure something like 4 to 5 days. Amateurs are lucky to accomplish 30 miles in a day - day after day.

Got a good (REAL good) bicycle? Got all the necessary supplies to take with you? Will your bicycle take the extra weight of these supplies? You'll need at least a bicycle with a rear rack & panniers, change of clothes, lots of water bottles, at least one spare tube, tire levers, frame pump or CO2 cartridge, a credit card or lots of $$$ and a good cell phone. Clothing? Got at least one good pair of padded cycling shorts? Plus some type of athletic shirts or cycling jerseys that wick away moisture & perspiration. Socks too should be like this. Cotton tube socks are in invitation to athlete's foot.

Start training now. You should be ready by Spring. Click on 2nd link below & read about "Training & Nutrition".

Is riding a bike for 2-3 miles a day good exercise?

Hey Supas,
As you can probably already tell there are several different answers to your question.

Probably the very first thing you should do is to go and get checked out by a doctor BEFORE you begin any physical exercise program.

If you want to be comfortable and have a more enjoyable experience when you do ride? Go to a local bike shop and get your bike "fitted" to you and have the mechanic check it out for proper adjustment on things like the derailer, brakes (VERY important!) and overall condition. REI, Sports Basement and most any reputable shop can help you with this. You would be surprised what a difference a minor adjustment can make as far as comfort and the way the bike works.

Start out slowly, be sure to stretch and ride as much as you feel comfortable doing at first. It's probably not such a hot idea to push yourself too hard when you start out.
Over time you'll naturally increase your time in the saddle and after you've been riding for a bit? Then you can push yourself a little and increase your mileage.

Personally? I've ridden over 100 miles in a single day with a 40lb load. But this was after several months of training and building up my mileage over time. I'm also 59 years old so if I can do it so can you.
Cycling is probably one of the best forms of exercise and can be a whole lot o fun as well. I've seen things and been places on a bicycle that not a lot of people get to experience, they're not going slow enough.
