Here's a link to an answer from a medical professional:

Most swallowed batteries cause no problem (89.9% of the time).

* Batteries lodged in the esophagus (the food pipe between mouth and stomach) must be removed immediately. They cause damage by their pressure against the wall of the esophagus, from leakage of caustic alkali, and the electrical current they generate. Injury can occur in as short a time as 1 hour. Full-thickness burns can occur in 4 hours. Batteries passing through the esophagus usually pass uneventfully through the entire digestive tract.

Despite everyone else's pronouncements, there's no certainty you will die.

CHILD SWALLOWED A BATTERY HELP!!!!!!?

Basically, I swallowed a button battery on accident on last Monday night, and it still hasn't come out of me by doing "number-2". I still have the taste of it in my mouth, is this bad? I don't have much of any other symptoms, except occasional piercing stomach aches. Shouold I go to my school nurse? (I am in high school.) What will they do? Should I go to the doctor? BTW, ever since I swallowed it, I've had a hacking cough and when I breathe in I feel like there's a frog in my throat and it hurts. However, I have been drinking normally (it's a little painful to swallow solid foods.) HELP PLEASE!!!

My dog swallowed a battery! what do I do?

Vet now...if it leaks he will die...my best friend did that when she was a kid...you can't let it go through his system it will kill him

What would happen if you swallowed a battery?

If it is a lithium coin cell you could be in real trouble. The higher voltage of lithium cells means that they can set up an electrochemical reaction that destroys the tissue near the battery. If it passes through your system quickly it won’t do a lot of damage. If it gets stuck in place it will dissolve a hole in your gut and any surrounding tissues. If this happens it requires emergency surgery and may leave you with serious long-term problems.Keep lithium coin cells and anything powered by them well away from kids.

What happens if I swallowed battery acid?

You destroy your esophagus and throat, and probably die a horrible painful chocking death.

I don't believe you consumed enough to worry about but...

if you do have issue obviously get help asap

First, remember the general rule: nothing is completely safe; if you can't figure out a way to use any given material to kill a human, you're not thinking hard enough. "Drop enough of it on his head" usually works if nothing else does.

Dry cells use a pasty electrolyte that most people call "battery acid" despite it not being all that acidic. If that's what you're talking about, how toxic it is depends on exactly what it is; it might be mainly NH4Cl (weakly acidic), or ZnCl2 (weakly acidic), or KOH (strongly alkaline), or any of a number of other substances. It may or may not include mercury; alkaline cells in particular are likely to contain at least a small amount of mercury.

It's almost certainly not a good idea to eat any, and it's best to avoid touching it as well, but it's probably not going to cause much more than a rash or mild chemical burn if you get some on your hand as long as you quickly and thoroughly wash it off.

Battery acid in a lead-acid storage cell (such as a car battery) is a different story. This really is acidic and is somewhat more dangerous stuff; it's sulfuric acid with some dissolved lead sulfate. Neither of these is particularly good for you; if you get any on yourself you're likely to get some fairly serious chemical burns, and if taken internally there will be the same burns plus the lead toxicity.
