Ibs And A Hiatal Hernia

Paxil for IBS and Hiatal Hernia with reflux?

My gastroenterologist has prescribed Protonix and Paxil for my IBS, hiatal hernia with reflux from the pit of the stomach up through the throat. I did take Paxil for 6 years and when I thought it was not working any more attempted to quit. The withdrawal symptoms were a nightmare; I thought I was going to die. I have been off Paxil since 2005 and explained the scenario to the doctor; he disagreed and said Paxil can be reintroduced into the system and that I needed a higher dosage. Also, I was told that if I do not take something for my high stress level and anxiety that it is impossible to get better. My fear is taking the medication and ever getting off of it again; I could not handle the horrible withdrawal. I did get the medicine and for 3 days have not taken any; my husband thinks I should listen to the doctor but they have never experienced withdrawal. Has any one out there had similar problems? Please help me with your opinion!

Can I get Medical Marijuana for a Hiatal Hernia?

I was recently diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and it basically means a part of my stomach slipped under my abdomen and went somewhere and now the stomach acid gets into my diaphragm when I sleep and gives me nausea in the morning, when I smoke marijuana It makes my stomach feel better and I can go on with the day instead of being sick. I also have medicines that do help but the marijuana is the only thing that makes it feel better every time. One of the medicines is an anti spastic because I do have IBS and my stomach needs to stay relaxed and the marijuana relaxes my stomach and the muscles aren't tense or Enflammed or spazzing. I know you can get medical marijuana if you are under 18 through your parents if you have a certain illness and muscle problems are one of them so I was wondering if anyone knows if I qualify if I talk to my doctor? I am under 18

Why does hiatus hernia occur?

Unlucky when they do occur, suffering with one myself for years now and the reflux and everything can be hell. Sleepless nights, sitting up to sleep and still throwing up stomach acid in the morning. And that right there is one of the major causes of hiatus hernias, throwing up. Along with anything else that strains or puts too much pressure on your delicate digestive tracts. Even a rough roller coaster ride can do some damage. And then again they might not. Nothing you can really do to prevent them only manage them as surgery has a relatively high failure rate so it’s rarely offered unless it’s a very large hiatus hernia.

Hiatal hernias are very common and usually insignificant. 40+ % of the general population develop one in their lifetime. They usually get to a certain size and then may get slightly larger over time. Conditions that increase intraabdominal pressure like coughing, sneezing, bearing down with a BM, heavy lifting, straining, etc. create hernias in weak areas of the abdominal cavity—thus, hiatal, umbilical, inguinal hernias. They are independently associated with gastroesophageal reflux. The entire stomach may actually be displaced into the chest with minimal symptoms. There is no need to change your eating habits if they are reasonable!

Which medicine will cure a hiatus hernia?

No medicine can cure a hernia. A hernia is a condition where an organ bulges through an opening in a muscle or a tissue that’s supposed to hold the organ in place. The hiatus is a small opening in the diaphragm (the muscular wall that separates organs of the chest cavity such as lungs and the heart, and those in the abdomen such as the stomach, the intestines, the liver, the spleen, and the pancreas) through which the food pipe (esophagus) passes and opens into the stomach. It is a physical problem and no amount of medicine can cure it. You can however opt for a surgical intervention or a chiropractic method to get the stomach back into its place. Check out this excellent article for more details.
