If A Horse Rubs His Head On You After You Take The Bridle Off Is He Being Disrespectful

What does it mean when a horse rubs its head on you?

I was at the riding school today and I always ride one horse, and today I went on a trek with my instructor and a group around the country side. We cantered up the hill and did a lot of trotting. (I'm not very good at riding, I'm still learning and I have a lot to improve on) After we got off our horses, I was standing with my horse for a while and it moved closer to me and rubbed it's head on me. A bit too hard as it pushed me a little bit. At first I thought it was being cute but then I actually think that she's being disrespectful towards me? I'm not sure though. Can someone tell me what it means? Thanks :) x

What does it mean when a horse rubs you?

Usually they rub their leg or rub on you with there head only is because the sweat on the bridle path gets really itchy and they just attempt to rub. Nothing troubling. My horse does it after every rider! Its nothing to be concerned about. Its bad because it becomes a habit and that habit is no fun because you always get knocked over aha plus its annoying and if your in a class and you stop at any moment they'll attempt and you'll loose tons of points. Best way is to just bump the reins (NOT curb) and usually they'll back away. When I mount and put him on the cross ties I usually let my horse just itch his head, and then put the halter on and so fourth!

What does it mean when my horse rubs against me?

It is semi-rude horse behavior actually. It can be mistaken for affection, but it is actually a sign of dominance. If your horse is itchy and uses you as a scratching post, it is disresptful towards you. preventing your horse from doing this will teach him that he needs to respect your space, and in turn strengthen your bond as horse and rider.

I am sure he would enjoy his face being rubbed with a towl or soft brush after a ride, but if you do this, make sure it is on your terms and not his =p

Horse rubbing head on us...should we allow this?

Should we let our horse rub his head on us? He did this after we first got him and we LOVED it ..we called it a horse hug but after a while we stopped allowing this because we were told to by our trainer. We hired a trainer because he bit me in the chest causing a bruise after I unknowingly ignored a warning nip to stop scratching his neck while his head was up high. We were also told not to give treats. We've heard all about the alpha horse blah, blah, blah. Then in talking to someone else who has a real way with horses... they say it's ok. That head rubbing IS how he shows affection and we should let him! That for him to have been allowed to head rub and then to have been disallowed would have had a negative affect on him. We stopped treats too because we were told to also. We were told the head rubbing could be unsafe if he did it too hard but I never felt afraid when he did it and he did it so gently with me and my 9 yr. old. I liked giving treats too but was told this would lead to biting. All I know is we did both when we first got him and I have missed his hugs. Has anyone been hurt by a horse head rubbing? How else is a horse supposed to show affection for you if your always pushing his head away like we were told to do.

Sincerely,
Confused

My horse keeps head butting me!?!?

i have a welsh cob, gelding that i have had for 16 years and he has always headbutted me and i'm getting annoyed with it, does anyone have any idea's why he's doing this or how to stop him from doing it? thank you.

What does it mean when a horse rubs up against you?

Could be itchy.

Either way, don't let him do it. It's cute until he rubs so hard that he knocks someone down.

If he starts doing it, just rub his face with your hand to try to get the itch. My horse does this when he has an itch near one of his eyes that he can't get himself. He rubs very gently on my shoulder as a "please scratch me, I can't get it!" plea, so I rub around his eyes and he feels better.

When horse nudges you, its trying to show dominance right?

Arg that bugs be when my horse does that..
I used to think it was cute.. like when I'd walk in front of him, and he's follow me, and nudge me with his nose.. lol

But now I'm starting to think it's a form of disrespect or something..
Whenever I'm standing beside him, holding his lead shank or reins.. he's always rubbing his head against me.. It hurts sometimes!!!! lol
I push him away constantly and he doesn't give up!!

Also, as soon as I take his bridle off his ears, he rubs his head against me..

I know I'm not answering your question.. but I really wish someone would tell me how I can get him to stop doing that..
