If I Go In The Navy As An E3 How Long Before I Can Qualify For An Officer

Going from enlisted to officer in the Navy?

I am currently in the Navy as an E3, and a push button ride to a third class Petty Officer once I finish A School for ET training. Right now I absolutely hate my rate. The Navy classed me in a job where I scored the lowest on the ASVAB and won't let me change rates. I am successful as an ET, I just don't like it. I have never been interested in electronics to the degree they want me to be.

I have given serious thought to being an officer in the Navy, but I have been given so many roundabout answers about to get there I have no idea what the hell is true anymore. I've had people tell me if I submit an officer packet I'll get stuck here at Great Mistakes even longer than I already am, which is 1 1/2 years at the rate I'm going. I want to take the ASTBS for being a helicopter pilot for the Navy, and on the practice test I scored a 98. On the ASVAB I scored an 89 without studying. I've been to college, and I was a high honor graduate with an above 3.5 GPA. I owned my own business which I started up myself before joining the Navy, if that makes one ounce of a difference (which I suspect it doesn't). I have no police records, I qualify for S clearance, I have never been drunk or gone drinking, I haven't gotten messed up in anything. Currently I am half way through the training for an ET and have a high 80, low 90 GPA but a 96% on the final tests. What are my odds for getting accepted into OCS, and how would I go about doing it? I'm pretty positive that PLR's on base exist to make it more confusing than necessary considering that it takes 3-5 weeks to schedule a dental appointment. ANY information would be helpful...heck, I'll even accept someone telling me that the Navy isn't the worst decision I've ever made in my life....but I want to be an officer, and I just need to know how to get there, and what my chances are with the information provided.

Thank you in advance!

Navy-from E3 to supply officer?

I am planning to join the Navy and wanna be a supply officer, I have B.A degree but not US -Citizen until at the end of next year. the recruiter said i either can join the navy right now and start from E3, after five months i 'll become a US citizen then apply for supply officer right away, OR i can wait until I got US citizenship, which means i need to wait one and half years. one of my navy friends recommended me to follow the 2nd option, would be easier for me to become a supply officer. but i think it might be easier for me if i start from enlist and holding the B.A to apply for the supply officer.

I am not sure which way would be better. if any of you who work in this area in navy, please help me out. and I am also wondering in the first option how long it takes from once i got US citizen to go to officer boot camp?some people say it might take six months to one year.
thanks!!

Once you go enlisted can you go officer, and after how long?

If you enlist, expect to not take any college classes for about a year to a year and a half from the date you leave for BMT.

The reason for this is because BMT is 8 weeks, your Tech School is anywhere from 8 to 56 weeks, and then you have 6 months or more of CDC's/upgrade training, and 1.5 years of strict OJT. Also be sure to note you will need to take time out 4-6months for deployments.

You will be hard pressed to take anymore than 2 classes a semester, so I wouldn't worry about being enlisted for only a few years for applying to OTS.

Should you finish your degree in your first contract, you will need to submit the necessary paperwork for OTS. Following the submission expect anywhere from 8 months to a year and a half for a a decision. This decision is not an automatic yes. The Air Force is looking for technical degrees, so anything otherwise may hurt you.

Should you be accepted to OTS, it could then be up to another half year for your reporting date to OTS.

Be care in whether you enlisted or stay in school and go Officer - nothing at all is a given.

Navy Reserve Enlisted to Officer?

Thanks for the input about OCS everyone. The only thing is, I spoke with my local Officer Recruitment Officer and he told me specifically that they are not looking for Officer Candidates who are looking to join the Reserves. He said if you have your 4-year degree you can apply to OCS for ACTIVE DUTY, but not Reserves. He explained that for Reserves, they are looking for people who are either prior-active duty or someone who has a lot of work experience, which I don't. The Marines and the Army Reserve will both allow me to apply to their OCS (who knows if I will get in) but the Navy won't even look at my application. I'd prefer the Navy, but for some reason I can't go straight to OCS if applying for the Reserves.

I'm enlisted in the NAVY. I would like to become a JAG officer...what are my options... I have no degree...?

Earn your bachelor's while enlisted then go to law school when you're out using the GI Bill. You can apply for JAG program (called SP) after finishing your first year.

Earn your bachelor's while enlisted with TA or after your service with the GI Bill then come back in as an officer and apply for the LEP.

Get your bachelor's, go to law school, become a lawyer, then apply for a direct commission as a JAG officer.

How difficult is it to become an officer after enlisting?

It will be more difficult once enlisted and then the opportunities will be limited to one service branch and will be dependent on supervisor's approval and opinions. The Navy will want to recover the costs of enlisted training. If the desire is to become an officer, go to graduate school and commission through Army Rotc, Afrotc, PLC or Navy Ocs. Since you are twenty four, you are already on independent status under Fafsa for financial aid purposes even as an undergraduate so the degree program does not have to be graduate level as it usually does to gain independent status. It could be a 2nd Bachelors in an area the Navy needs people like Civil Engineer Corps or Nupoc each of which has its own Navy OCS College Program. Nrotc and USNA only commission unrestricted line officers. Navy Ocs commissions unrestricted line, restricted line and staff officers. Hence CEC usually commission through Navy OCS. Your current degrees would definitely qualify for Supply, another area that is not open to Nrotc or USNA commissioned Ensigns. If your school has Afrotc or Rotc, sign up for the class this semester if possible or spring quarter and then again in the Fall.
Speak to an OSO. Will need at least a 1st class Marine PFT, 225 minimum to be considered for any Marine Officer program. A 280 is considered competitive for Occ.

Good Luck!

Enlisted or OCS? How long is the wait list for Navy OCS?

I have a master s and looking to join officer. Yes, I understand there is no guarantee especially since my degree isn t technical. I have been advised to go enlisted, which I may start as either E-3 or E-4. Thoughts? How long is the wait list for OCS?
