Banning America’s most popular firearm will enrage our 80 million gun owners, leading to political backlash more extreme than in the 1994 elections following the assault weapon ban giving Republicans control of the House, and 2016 presidential election where Trump defeated Clinton after she stated “the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment. And I am going to make that case every chance I get.”With more legislative seats they’ll respond with national laws like they have in the 40 states they control, where people can own any gun they want including machine guns, and governments are required to issue concealed cary permits to any law abiding resident except in the 12 states which require no permit.They’ll legalize concealed carry nationally preempting state and local law, with no permit required. We’ll see an increase of people carrying concealed from more than 16,300,000[1](those with permits, outside the 12 states that don’t require one) to perhaps half of all gun owners at 40,000,000. They’ll eliminate gun-free zones where madmen currently get away with mass murder.1 in 6 adults carrying firearms everywhere will discourage spree killers who need unarmed victims for good odds at a high body count. The few that try anyways won’t get as far. We’ll have reduced, but not eliminated, a rare type of gun violence which usually kills about 30 people a year.Ironically, it’s gun bans that made the AR15 America’s most popular rifle, now in common use so ownership cannot be prohibited under the Supreme Court’s District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago decisions. Before the 1994 crime bill they were just a curiosity. After it everyone had to own what the government didn’t want them to have, and discovered they were a lot of fun to shoot. Sales skyrocketed every time a prominent politician tried to revisit the issue, like President Obama following the 2012 Sandy Hook murders.
