If You Had To Pick Only 1 Handgun For The Rest Of Your Life Which Would It Be

I want to own one pistol and one rifle for the rest of my life. Which ones should I buy?

Attend a Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) safety program first. Meet people and once trained, try out various firearms while firing together on a range.Firearms preferences are much like the choice of a wife/life mate, highly individualized.Personally, I’m fond of the AR-15 platform, but I’m retired US Army and that would be obvious. I also loathe the M9 pistol, preferring the M1911A1 pistol, which many others loathe. I also am quite fond of both the AR-10 and M1A (a semiautomatic version of the M-14 selective fire battle rifle), for their accuracy. I’d go with the M1A for personal reasons.I’ve also been exposed to dozens of other platforms, some of those I might choose as well, save that I’m also a cheap SOB and make a major expense purchase of only the most accurate versions, which cost a *lot* more for an accurized version (save the M1911A1, which I prefer a “GI model”).I won’t recommend a single, solitary model of the few I spoke of to you. You’ll have to learn what you prefer and what you can accurately fire. But, networking with fellow firearm owners and using their firearms, you’ll learn what your own preferences are, as well as learn nearly instinctive safety, safe handling, how to accurately fire and what your own preferences are.Our eldest daughter loathed the “punishing” recoil and volume of my M1911A1, but loved a Ruger .22LR pistol. To each his own, said the lady as she kissed her cow.

If you could only own one firearm for the rest of your life, what would it be?

“If you could only own one firearm for the rest of your life, what would it be?”Perhaps this one. An AKS-74uNow why this you ask?Simple. It is the only gun I have shot with. I’m not much of a gun person so I’ll stick with what I am familiar with.Though I’d like a brand new one. I really really really don’t want to inherit my uncle’s gun which is the AK in question. It was so rusty and old, quite similar to this picture below…Well, not that rusty but quite rusty.Rusty enough that it used to have a folding stock. The folding stock eventually broke into irreparable pieces so my uncle had to carve one out of acacia wood and inserted it on what’s left of the broken stock. But other than that part, there was nothing else wrong about it other than being rusty and old.Despite its horrible state, it still can shoot. In fact, I used it to hunt some wild boars that were destroying some rice paddies owned by another relative. I was scared since I don’t have much ideas about guns and I was paranoid about it might malfunction and explode right on my face since it was rusty as hell. We finished our job hunting the boars out and thankfully, the gun didn’t break down or go kaboom. That gun had quite a history before it landed in my hands, my uncle says.He had that rifle several years ago when some group of rogue communist rebels tried to rob some poor farmer family out in the fields. My uncle was near the place with some folks, also armed, hunting those pesky boars. One of them saw the plight of the farmer and after realizing they were rebels and were robbing, they went full vigilante and fired on the communists. After a few minutes of trading rounds, the gunfight stopped. The rebels ran away towards the deep jungle, leaving one of them dead and their truck full of sacks of rice. And that dead body had the very gun we are talking about, already in it’s state of breaking down. After all that, some CAF-GU and Police arrived, arrested my uncle and his folks. By law, they are supposed to be jailed, but, generally, ARMM back then was quite lawless and corrupt, very easy to bribe and control people of authority. After pulling some strings by another relative, my uncle and his group got out only with a heavy reprimand from the cops. And he managed to take the AK.So that was the story. Basically, I choose that gun since it was the first and only gun I had handled, used, and hunt with. I’d wouldn’t want to own my uncle’s AK, of course but rather, a brand new one.

Should I sell my shotgun and buy a handgun?

Only answer if you have firearms knowledge.

I recently obtained a concealed carry permit, but I will not be able to afford a handgun in the foreseeable future. I currently have a 12 ga. Remington 870 with multiple accessories I could trade in for credit somewhere. I'd like to see what other's opinions are. Here are the tradeoffs:

Trade for handgun:

I have a handgun to protect myself whenever I legally can. Already know which model I'd like and all that research is complete. I would be losing my 12 ga, so stopping power in a home-defense situation would be reduced.

If I don't trade:

I will still have the shotgun for home-defense, but will be unarmed every time I leave the house. Although I do my best to avoid sketchy situations, it's not uncommon for me to be faced with them.

If you could only use one rifle caliber for the rest of your life, for every situation, what would it be?

Thanks for the A2A! The question was: If you could only use one rifle caliber for the rest of your life, for every situation, what would it be?I WANT to say .30-’06. And you know what? I will. I know that .308 (7.62x51, the old NATO round) is the modern equivalent, but there’s more room in the .30-’06 case for powder or a longer bullet because the case is about a half inch longer than .308 case.I’d sure miss my .30 carbine and 5.56 though.
