In what ways were the North, South and West economically different?

I am going from memory here and you should take this for what it is... The north had an economy based in manufacturing while the south produced much of the raw materials used in that manufacturing (cotton, corn, etc.). The south had to depend on the north to produce its goods and they were not happy about this. Additionally, the south had established an economy based on slave labor. When opposition to this system grew in the north the south reacted to protect their interests. I assume the western economy was based on ore (iron, silver, etc.) but I'm not exactly sure. When the Civil War began the north was better able to supply and move their troops due to the availabilty of factories and a better infrastructure. The link below is a good article to help better explain the situation:

Which countries have a large north-south or west- east economic gap?

Its much easier to say in what countries such gaps do not exist.Small-sized or micro states, blessed by well-developed economies (such, for example, as Andorra, Bahrain, Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Liechtenstein, Macao, Maldives, Malta, Monaco and Singapore), arguably (!) do not have pronounced under-developed and geographically distinct areas (territories). However, others - similar in size but with lesser per-capita (for example Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Northern Cyprus, Palau or Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) - have those gaps as well.As to bigger countries, this division is inevitable because of the uneven distribution of mineral and natural resources as well as of the wider variability of geographical features across the bigger terrains. With time such differences lead to work-force migrations which further deepen the divide. There are, of course, four main directions (N, S, W, E) identifiable on the map of any state. Consequently, if two regions are economically different (and, as it was said, in a big or less developed country it’s always the case) one region will always be located in one of those four directions from another.

South Korea is a free country with a democratically elected government. They have freedom of speech and of the press. they have a great economy and the citizens are free to travel outside their own country. they are allowed to have telephones and internet. They have plenty of food . The main source of income for the government is NOT counterfeiting American money.
Norht Korea is a communist dictatorship. the people are brainwashed to adore their "dear leader", but are not allowed to have free elections. The economy is awful, they do not produce enough food and many people starve. They have no personal freedoms and cannot travel outside their own country.telephones and internet ate extremely limited The people are not allowed contact or news from the outside world. The biggest source of money for the government is their well-known counterfeiting of U.S. money.

Why is Northern Europe more economically competitive than Southern Europe?

a2aIt is a real thing, not an artifact or coincidence.Several reasons:History of development. Many Northern countries had the indudstrial revolution first: UK, Germany, Northern France. That made them richer, and spread to their neighbours.Geography. Coal & iron ore were critical in C19 development, and they are in the north: North of England, North eastern France, industrial parts of northern Germany, Sweden. There are far fewer in the south: you don't hear of the huge colliers or iron mines of Greece or Spain (some in Basque * Catalunya - in the North, and culturally more North EuropeCulture. I think it was Max Weber who ascribed this to Protestant Work Ethic. And there is a lot to that. Not because Protestant is better than Catholic per se, but the reformation, spreading the money from the Church around, the shift of power from religious to secular - those all had huge, and positive, impacts.Luck of timing It does depend when you do the test. If you had done that survey in 1600 you would have said South was richer: Spain, Portugal, Venice were hugely rich; Scandinavia were subsistence farmers & peasants. If you did it in 1800 then the East (Ottomans) were the strongest, and Germany did not exist. Scandinavia would still be poor.History of Conquest Much of South eastern europe was ruled by Ottomans (Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Balkans, etc) who kept it poor and peasant society; then by Communists (again, corruption and less development).---Finally, although North/South is a divide, you need to be careful. Ireland is geographically North, but culturally & development wise is closer to the South - at least until 1990s it was very much so. Lithuania is very far north, bt ranks #45 on that list - below ItalyThere are cultural divisions within countries too. Some Germans call Bavaria North Italy; ) See also Belgium. Catalunya is very different to Andulacia.---You mention corruption. That is related, but it is a complex link.Estonia is very corrupt - comparable to Greece. Ireland is corrupt. Many S E asian ciultires (even ones scoring high on your list) still have a culture of bribes and "presents"I suspect the relationship is more of a feedback: as countries get richer & more developed then corruption goes down.

What are the biggest differences between West Africa and East Africa; culturally, economically, and politically?

West Africa comprises of many countries unlike East Africa which has 5 countries (Tanzania,Kenya,Uganda,Rwanda and Burundi). If you were to choose West Africa you'll still have a hard task of choosing between 18 countries compared to East Africa were you'll only have 5 fewer options which you can also dig deeper to learn about their culture and political stands. Don't go to West Africa (reasons)1. As I said before you'll still have to choose between 18 countries. 2. West Africa is not settled i.e the case of Boko Haram in Nigeria which also affects some neighboring countries3. Culturally, its hard to say because there are 18 countries each with unique culture. There may also be cultural differences between a country. Go to East Africa (reasons)1. You only have 5 countries to choose from. You can spend 5 days studying each country then you pick one with less effort. 2. East Africa is rich in nature and attract millions of tourists around the globe. You can vist some during your free time or weekends. 3. East Africa is peaceful. Not mentioning Burundi. 4. There is no big cultural differences between East Africans
